Replacing the gas tank-Wife ran over a huge rock and caved it in.

Post by Bob Taner »

Hi all. I own a 2004 Vibe FWD. While living on the island of St. Marten in the french west indies, my wife ran up on a curb and came down on a boulder about a foot tall. It crushed about 1/3 of the gas tank. It missed the exhaust pipe that runs under the tank and did not do any other damage at all. The tank now looks like a pop can crushed one end. I have about an 8 galllon capacity now. It does not leak but I am worried about the sharp corners where it is wrinked up. Now that I am in MI with all the snow and salt if this tank starts to leak with the exhaust pipe under it the car will go up in flames fast. Anyway, I found a used gas tank on eBay listed for a 05-09 vibe but the guy doesn't know for sure about the years after talking with him. Does anyone know if all the FWD tanks are the same part number? ThanksBT

There have been a few members here who worked in places where they could look up part numbers but we don't see them much lately. There's a website gmpartsdirect.com where you can order stuff. They will sell you a vibe fuel tank but they don't show you part numbers. I started to look up both 04 & 05 fuel tanks the 05 one was listed as 05-07 but my ISP crapped out before I could look up the 04 one to see if it was different.(posting this from the phone)maybe you can go into a gm dealer and sweet talk them into doing a part number lookup for you.and welcome to genvibe

I did not realize the tanks were metal. I do know Toyota uses a "plastic-type" in other vehicles. Guess I need to check out my 2008 and see what material is made out of!Ahh! 2003 and 2004 Models are metal; 2005+ are polymer/plastichttp://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=31970Am wondering if a 2005/2006 polymer/plastic gas tank can be used to replace the metal tank on your 2004 AWD Vibe? May be worth looking into!

Thanks for the replies. It took my wife until we returned to the states before she told me what had happened. The heat shield on the bottom of the tank that was also crushed started hitting the exhaust pipe one day and so I looked under the car. I was like "Holy Crap!"If my tank had been the newer plastic type the car would of surely of burned to the ground with my 5 month old in the back seat. It's hard to even think about that happening. I will surely try to find if the newer type will fit. We do not have to do all the off roading now like we did on the island so it should be ok. BT

Hope you get your gas tank sorted. You moved from St. Marten to MI? Blizzards instead of trade winds?

Got a 04 metal gas tank off a Matrix from eBay for $140 shipped. Hope it's the same as the Vibe. Looks like it. Crossing fingers.

Finished. Didn't take pics, I didn't want to touch my camera with all the gas on me. I changed the fuel pump as well. The new pump does not make any noise when you turn the key to on like the old one did. Maybe the old one was going out?? who knows. THANK YOU to Sublimewind for the link to the manual. It helped tons. Finally, I don't have a 8.5 gallon tank anymore.

Hey Sublimewind, could I get that service manual link too? I'm about to drop my wife's tank to replace it. Rusted hole in the side near that tube that goes out the back. I have two 2004 vibes and they are both leaking in exactly the same #$*@! spot.

Generally speaking, how hard is replacing it? Is it as straight forward as it seems?

Thanks!!!
