Newbie, need some advice

Post by Anne Mctwang »

Okay, I have a 2005 vibe. I luv it. Has 135,000 KM on it. Standard 5 speed. The problem is that it's revving very high between certain speeds. From 10 to 20KM per hour, from 70 to 80 KM a hour and from 100 to about 115 KM per hour. Before you start wisecracking I am in the right gear. And I change the oil every 8KM's. I used to own a Mazda Protoge and at about the same KM's it started doing the same. They changed an filter in the engine and the problem went away. Is the engine in the Vibe similar and it most likely a problem with a filter? I'm taking it to my dealer on Tuesday and want to sound like I'm in the right ball park with this and not a total fool. ThanksAnne

it does sound like you are describing a slipping clutch. You're driving along, not shifting, not pressing the clutch pedal, and the engine RPMs shoot up, that's a clutch problem.Wish it was as easy as replacing an air filter, but its not a cheap repair. You don't need to go to the dealer to get it done, you might find a better deal at a transmission shop. THey'll have to remove the transmission to get to the clutch, so there's a number of billable labor hours in that job.but if you did have the same problem in another car and fixed it with an air filter replacement, then maybe we don't understand what the symptoms really are. I don't see how an air filter could affect that, unless perhaps it was a computer comtrolled automatic transmission. But that's not what you have in a five speed 05 Vibe.If it is the clutch, then it's something you;ll need to get taken care of before long. Each time the RPMs shoot up, it is wearring more off the clutch, and the problem gets worse. Eventually, you could get to the point where no power from the engine gets to the transmission, then you have a car that won't move..so , welcome to genvibe, sorry to hear of the troubles
