Another 2010 Newbie With an Oil Question

Post by Capt.Vibe »

Long time lurker, first time poster. Jumped on a 2010 Red Hot base 1SA a few months ago when the deals were too good to pass up. I hold many of you personally responsible for buying it. I picked it up in August and since then have put only 3000KM on it. It has yet to be driven in the rain, which obviously means it won't see snow this year. I'll be storing it next week. Should I do my first oil change now or when I take it out next spring? Also, what's the deal with the oil type? Cap says 5w-20/0w-20 but the 2010 manual clearly says 5w-30 or 0w-30 for winter and makes no mention of the grades on the cap. The 2009 owners manual says 5w-20 or 0w-20 for winter. So what gives? What should I use and when should I change it?

http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=38351Change the oil in the spring if it's going to be parked all winter.I have had zero problems using 5w-20 and will be switching to 0w-20 when I can find a place that sells it out here. Canadian tire, Walmarx don't carry it; I'll be checking Lordco and Napa soon. Hope they don't charge half a liver and a kidney for it...

Change the oil now. The reason is that you need to remove all the corrosive byproducts of combustion that are suspended in the oil. Those corrosives will be sitting in there all winter munching away at the inside of the engine.Ideally you would change it again when taken out of storage to get rid of any condensation that has accumulated during storage. But I think clean oil going into storage is much more important.

I have the same car like you, year, even the color. And the same dilema. At 3000 mile I changed the oil and they put in 10W30 (recomanded in 2010 manual). When I saw the receipt was too late. However I believe in manual is a mistake and from now on I will request the oil recomanded on the engine cap .

LOL That is too funny.I just called the stealership and they confirmed they use 5W-20 for 2009/10 models. When I informed them the 2010 manual clearly says 5W-30, he was just as baffled as I was. Anyone tried calling GM on this?

Definitely change the oil now, and then drive it again normally next year. Any condensation that may appear during the winter will easily be boiled off on a good run in the spring. It's the acids and combustion by-products you don't want to leave in there.Disconnect the battery as well, or leave it on a trickle charge. I would fill the gas tank fully, to help prevent potential condensation in there. If possible, find a gas with as low an ethanol level as you can. If it's less than 6 months, I wouldn't bother with any additives.I would also leave at least one window open just a crack to allow the interior to breathe - assuming it's inside. This will help reduce potential condensation on the inside.I've also used dryer sheets inside the car (about 1/2 dozen spread around under seats, etc) - apparently mice don't like them, and it helps keep the car from smelling musty at all if it does get a little damp.I've done the above things to store my seasonal vehicles for several years and haven't had an issue. My garage is unheated, so I also leave a small fan circulating air under the car at all times to prevent condensation from being able to form. I find the concrete really "sweats" if we get a rapid temperature change from cold to warm - and this helps a lot. I also park the car over a couple of large flattened boxes to help keep the moisture away. It really depends on your environment though - we get a lot of temperature swings and high humidity around here - so it's a real concern.Good luck!JohnP.S. - don't start it during the storage season unless you're taking it out and getting everything fully warmed up. Anything less, and you're just adding condensation into various places that will sit there until next time. If the weather co-operates, it's worthwhile to turn the wheels once in a while like this. I hope to get my "garage queen" out this weekend for some exercise. It's been sitting for about a month now. Probably the last chance I'll have for a while.PPS - I'd stick to a 5W20. I suspect the manual is written in error. The '09 manual specifies the wrong transmission fluid for the automatic too...

Ok, so today the garage queen went into hibernation. Let me know if I forgot something.Wash and wax....checkChanged oil 5W-20....checkInflated tires to 40PSI.....check...Ideally, I would have liked to put her on jack stands with the wheels off the ground but the spot was too tight for me to work properly on the driver side.Dryer sheets spread inside.....checkNegative battery terminal disconnected....checkFilled the tank, added StaBil, drove her around town shopping today for an hour.....checkParked in neutral, handbrake off, 2 blocks of wood blocking the tires.....checkThat's about it. I had to leave the windows closed, not sure about spiders and other insects in my old mans garage.Again, if I forgot anything please let me know.
