2009 passenger airbag location?

Post by beemerphile1 »

This evening I started dismantling the dash of my 09 to find a location to add some accessory outlets. I don't understand where the passenger side airbag is and don't want to install anything that would interfere with it's operation. I pulled all the plastic from the center area around the shifter and up around the radio. I also pulled the glove box.Assuming that the airbag is above the glove box, it appears that the entire dash will have to blow apart for the bag to deploy. The plastic above the glove box runs the entire width of the dash. That doesn't seem like a good design. Am I crazy, where is the airbag?

It's right where you think it is... It will either split the dash open, oor the top of the dash will pop upward when it deploys... When digging around, stay away from the bright yellow wire-loomed wires... those are airbag wires.. You'll know them when you see them..

Why not just add the 12V accessory ports to the center console? Tap into the other 12V port for power? Looks like there is plenty of space just below the center console arm rest.

Quote, originally posted by ou.grizzly »Why not just add the 12V accessory ports to the center console? Tap into the other 12V port for power?... A couple of reasons. I don't like the fact that the factory accessory port is switched off with the ignition. I want to use a GPS, radar detector, and XM Roady. All of these will be used on top of the dash or on the face of dash in the case of my XM Roady. (I refuse to pay a subscription for a radio that I can only listen to in the car) That is a lot of wires to be draped across the dash from down below.Since I cannot drill the dash and install accessory ports because of the airbag I have decided to install 3 ports in the slot below the radio which I believe was intended for CDs. I haven't had time to do it yet because of other projects.I have installed a trailer hitch, trailer wiring, body side molding, and factory mud guards. I also need to get a brake controller and install that for the trailer. I will be doing more mods including the dash accessory ports early this winter.

It's on top of the dash where it is flat.. If you get at an angle, with the sun hitting it a certain way, you can see a rectangle that sort of sinks in more than the rest of the dash.. Kinda perforated I guess..

Just be sure not to overload a circuit.
