coolant

Post by Socks »

Sounds like a stupid question, but since I dont have an owners manual, I have no idea. What kind of coolant does this vehicle take? I know GM uses DEX however, I also know toyota uses its own stuff in a lot of vehicles. Im wondering because I honestly dont see any in teh coolant overflow tank and I can tell the colour

Ah - what coolant came OEM - one of the great mysteries of the Universe. No one, even GM, seems to know for sure, especially for the early year models. I think my '09 has Dexcool 5 yr 150,000 mile coolant. Some think Dexcool is not good. There was some major lawsuit a few years ago. It is now sold as "Prestone Dexcool."

The 03-08 has Toyota Pink, not Dexcool. However, nearly every mechanic now puts in the 50/50 blend (meaning 50% dexcool). Don't sweat it; go with the blend at your mechanic.

When they first replaced the coolant in my 2003 the dealer told me it was Dexcool. But the strange thing was that the 2003 owner's manual said to change at 2 years/24,000 miles. If it was Dexcool that would be 5 years/50,000 or 150,000? miles. Many discussion here about what it really was. Sure looked orange.

ok, now heres the problem though, I cant see the original coolant. Im only going to assume since it has 87k on it, that it uses the toyota pink stuff. That or just flush the entire system which is kinda gonna be a pain since its cold outside. Thanks for the input

One more reason why I would go with the Prestone. If you click on the pic to enlarge it, you can plainly see on the bottle that it's compatible with any brand, any color, any make, any metal and again, you can get it anywhere. Just pour it in the radiator (ENGINE COLD) 'till it's full to the top, then add to the overflow bottle 'till it's about half full. Check the radiator (ENGINE COLD) frequently to make sure it stays full and also check the overflow bottle. Check the coolant and the oil frequently. Neglect will kill even the toughest engine.
