Tire Pressure Warning - no reset needed. Unusual?

Post by jake75 »

I got a low tire pressure warning light. Checked tires - left rear 24 psi, others 30 psi. Filled all to 32 psi. Started car - warning light now off. No reset or anything. Drove it 10 miles - still no reappearance of that warning light. Strange. I will monitor that left rear tire to see if the loss reappears.

Over the American Labor Day the 2008 Vibe took damage to the side wall which I was not aware of until the warning light came on approximately 300 miles later on the way back home. Tire shop filled it with air so I could make it to another location who actually had a Good Year RS-A in stock, and the light went off. They did not reset it either to my knowledge.

You shouldn't need to reset. The light only told you that it was under inflated, that it had changed substantially since the setting was originally set. Once the tire is back to full pressure everything is as it was.I'm not sure exactly how the Vibe works. Some work with the ABS and the rotation differences based on tire diameter. Some of the higher priced ones have electronic sending units inside each wheel that continuously monitor and transmit tire pressure. Some have to do with suspension component height. I seem to recall that the Vibe works off of the ABS sensors. The down side to this is they only work when rotating and if your tire should go flat while parked, you won't know until you've driven and ruined it!Dave

Over at MO (Matrix Owners) some of the members installed snow tires and they were trying to figure a way around not having the warning light coming on. Some members built a tube out of pvc pipe, installed the valve stems into it somehow, and put like 32 psi into the apparatus. The pipe was then just put in the rear cargo area and the light would not come on.

The left rear was down from 32 to 31 psi but so were the rest so it is just the lower temps today. When I used to get my car serviced at the Pontiac Dealer I got a sheet showing a lot of stuff including the tire pressures. [At least they pretended to do all the routine checks.] I wonder if the Buick dealer that is now a Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealer even bothered to check the tires when I took the '09 Vibe in for LOF two months ago.
