Touchscreen question

Post by vrecksler »

OK, so I have found the receiver I want and searching this forum it sounds like the double din will work; and potentially without any mounting kit. Unbolt the stocker and in goes the new unit.My question is for the people who have large LCD's or touchscreens: how important is temperature for these things? The reason I ask is because I do take my car to the mountains during the ski/snowboard season and it gets damn cold. Heat is not that big of a problem for me but I would hate to plunk down my cash only to have it konk out due to cold. Thanks!

The manual for that unit at http://www.bhi.co.za/docs/409/...l.pdf saysQuote, originally posted by page2 »â€¢ The monitor built in this unit has been producedwith high precision, but it may have someineffective dots. This is inevitable and is notmalfunction.• Do not expose the monitor to direct sunlight.• Do not operate the touch panel using a ball-pointpen or similar tool with the sharp tip.Touch the buttons on the touch panel with yourfinger directly (if you are wearing a glove, take itoff).• When the temperature is very cold or very hot...– Chemical changes occur inside, causingmalfunction.– Pictures may not appear clearly or may moveslowly. Pictures may not be synchronized withthe sound or picture quality may decline insuch environments.Quote, originally posted by page3 »Temperature inside the car...If you have parked the car for a long time in hot or coldweather, wait until the temperature in the car becomesnormal before operating the unit.Quote, originally posted by page75 »Allowable Storage Temperature: –10°C to +60°CAllowable Operating Temperature: 0°C to +40°Cso I would rate "damn cold" as being less than the allowable storage temperature of –10°C. –10°C is right cold, but damn cold is a bunch lower than that. So I'd say you have a reason to be concerned

cold shouldn't be an issue, and if it is, it won't stay cold for long, when you start to drive... It CAN be sluggish though... In fact it very well may BE sluggish in the cold, i'm sure you've seen this with other displays in the cold before though..

I always wondered this too. I know for certain there are times when I have to start up my car and it is well below -10C. Usually it isn't below about -20C though. But still. I wonder if they are talking that any damage can occur? I have never had any problems with the LCD displays on any of my head units, but I also have never had a full color LCD like you're talking about, but I do know that mine get really slow in the cold. I wonder what effect one of those new LED type displays would have under cold conditions, and if they can be produced as a touch screen...

An LCD will always be effected by temperature to some degree.. It's a physical change in the crystals happening, and anything physically moving in a liquid is typically effected by temperature... LEDs, non-issue, solid state, zero moving parts, could be frozen to kelvin temps without changing it's properties, except for maybe making it brighter.. lol..

That's what I figured. The extreme cold would just reduce the resistance the wires are producing and make it work even better in an LED. Anyone using a touchscreen actually had any problems from winters?
