Steel Rims - 09's

Post by 09Vibe »

Yes I know this topic has been beaten to death and I've read most of the posts too... I'm shopping for winter steel rims for our 09, 2.4Litre.Dealer says they have learned the hard way already with trying to fit other rims to the 09's. First off, they recommend OEM hub centric not multi-fit as they will vibrate and not balance properly, 15" Toyota rims don't properly fit now either and there is an off set difference between the 1.8L and 2.4L rims?, go figure... So the only option that they recommend is the OEM Pontiac 16" Steelie or the same from Toyota. $100 per rim in my area from GM, $85 per rim at Toyota. Anyone else running into this oddity ?

15 inches won't fit a 2.4L because of the bigger brake disks. There is not enough clearance so you are stuck with 16 inches. My Gm dealer told me back in February 2008 to expect somewhere around 100$ for each steel rims so I went to the local Toyota dealer insted. I never bothered to confirm the actual price from the GM dealer. 85$ seems high for the Toyota rims, I managed to get them for 54$ at the local Toyota dealer. If you are currently running alloys, don't forget that you will also need a set of 20 regular nuts for your steel rims since the nuts from the alloys are different.

Thx for the info kowell, I guess I am off to my local Toronto Toyota dealer for the steelies... yeah thats what they told me - $80, maybe the price went up who knows. TireRack seems like a great option for you guys in the U.S. but by the time those packages get up here to us with the customs brokerage fees and duty on top of it... we might as well buy local. Thx again guys...

for ontario toyota dealers ask them if they offer snow tire and wheel specials coming up, the wheels are only around $50 when combined with a snow tire, you are a bit early, a month or so and they should be out

I was hoping to pick up a cheap seat of Scion wheels - the six spoke (split spoke) alloys but I got the 2.4L. Camry wheels are ugly.

tirerack has steel wheels, but I recommend shopping around...I bet you could get a good deal if you looked in a few places. People sell theirs all the time on ebay and sites like this... There's also auto junk yards which I'm sure would have used ones that are completely fine..

I deal a lot with the wholesale and distribution side of the automotive aftermarket industry. There are several companies in Montreal and Toronto that either sell "take-offs" OEM wheels that have been installed on a new car for transport but removed before the car ever gets to the dealers lot which must still be considered used or distribute wheels made to OEM specs OE fit wheels both at a much lower cost that new OEM wheels. While these companies don't sell to the public they do sell to tire shops and even the dealers. I would suggest that you check prices at some local tire shops not just at the dealer and ask for OE take-off or OE fit steel wheels. BTW dealers have been know to sell take off wheels as new especially with witnter wheel and tire packages because the customers never see the wheel before it is installed on the car in the service bay so never see the marks from when it was installed on another car before.

Thanks for the info., I found a great place in the Toronto area, tire & rim specialists who seem to be getting rave reviews on many other forums as well. They have the OEM take offs for my Vibe as you mention and also a great deal at the moment on the Pirelli SnowSports, OEM size. $800 taxes in which I think is pretty reasonable compared to my dealer packages (checked GM & Toyota around here).http://www.joycitytires.com/Cheers.

Hey - small world, yeah I was there too comparing packages and speaking with Param / Eric, they didn't have the Pirellis' that I wanted but gave me a decent quote on the Toyo KX's. They didn't mention Semperit however, they had Generals in stock last week for $800 though (whole package). Never heard of Semperit but they get decent reviews from Europe I see, lets hope its a mild winter anyway!

A local tire shop quoted me $460 dollars for 4 new snow tires mounted/balanced. I said "good day" and left.

And if you had driven across the border to the north, $460 would be one hell of a deal!!!

Never heard of Semperit but they get decent reviews from Europe I see, lets hope its a mild winter anyway! The Toyo KX is a good tire. It one of the few tires designed and pattern tested for Canadian winter driving conditions. Every year Toyo sends there new tread designs and rubber compounds to Quebec for testing every winter and makes changes based on the data gathered. Another tire to consider that has surprised a lot of people and is completely off the Radar is the Nankang winter tires. And the price is much lower than the more popular brands. Was talking to the technical director of the company that distributes them on Friday. He was saying the tire shortage caused by the snow tire law in Quebec last year forced a lot of people that wouldn't normally have bought them to put them on their cars. The feedback was they are as good or better than the name brand tire the drives had on the car previously and no technical issues were reported by their dealer network.

I usually buy online and pay someone to mount/balance for me.. lol.. I have a local place that will mount/balance for 12/tire... not to bad, for bringing in tires..
