For the 2009/2010 1.8 liter manualApproximately, when the reserve light goes on, how big is that reserve in km ?Thanks,J'aimerais savoir combien peut-on faire de Km lorsque la lumière s'allume.Merci,Me gustarÃa saber cuánto se puede hacer Km cuando la luz se prende.Gracias,
I made the test the other week to wait for the low-fuel light and then go fill the car. The light comes on when there is about 7-8L remaining in the tank. The distance this can cover depends on the type of driving you are doing as well as the engine but the gas reserve doesn't change from one setup to another. Estimate 7 liters to play it safe.

Isnt the tank suppose to be 13 gallons?I always wait until the gas light comes on, and I usually get a little over 11 gallons in it at that point. So it appears that theres quite a bit left.

I have what might be an illogical preference for Shell gasoline so I tend to fill up whenever I happen to be passing a Shell station. The one near me stopped selling gas - long time owner said Shell wanted combo Convenience Store-gas pumping operations, not his traditional service station - gasoline operation. As long as he was pumping the volume, and he was, I don't know why Shell would care.. His allegation that Shell sold gas at a lower price to the other type oprations doesn't seem right as I would think the govt. would be all over that kind of discrimination. Shell moved away from company owned stations a long time ago. BP aka now as Amoco recently sold all of their owned local retail operations to a private company.

...ditto here, tank takes about 11 US gallons when light comes on for our '09 Vibe base (1.8L auto)....and, 13.2 gal. - 11.0 gal.(fill-up) = 2.2 gallon "reserve"

wel I got close then. Just last week I thought I'd see when the light comes on. The needle got down to a hair above the white E line, no light, so I chickened out. It took 10 Gallons.
I almost went too far with my earlier 2003 when I wanted to see how far I could go on a tank. When I finally filled it up, it took a couple tenths more than the 13 gallons or whatever the manual states the tank holds. That made me realize I didn't want to push my luck again.
Canadian Driver did a 50 litre fuel challenge with a bunch of fuel efficient cars. They drove them all the same route until they ran out of gas. The vibe was 3rd in fuel economy at 5.9 l/100km.But they also noted when the low fuel warning light came on. They got 187km before they ran out of fuel completely.By my calculations that means a 11 litre reserve in their tests (someone double check my math). You can read the full details here: http://www.canadiandriver.com/...e.htm
Mine will take about 15 gallons to fill when it is very low. I think the 13 gallon tank was not a very good estimate.

I run below empty many times. I fill up more than most people here, although not as much as some. The reason to not go too low is so that you are sure to fill up before you run out. Sometimes if I'm having an especially good mpg tank, I try to see how many miles I can get out of it. Best so far is 456 miles.Quote, originally posted by L5K »Mine will take about 15 gallons to fill when it is very low. I think the 13 gallon tank was not a very good estimate. Now, overfilling is something I try to avoid. I usually top it off, try to get to the next even dollar, but 15 gallons is all the way up the filler tube . You risk flooding the charcoal canister that way. But then again, I think I have done that too and haven't had to replace any fuel system components. How far you can go when the low fuel light comes on depends on your fuel efficiency. Run some tests. Collect data and average it over several tanks, try to get an average efficiency number mgs, or L/100km) Fill up a few times as soon as possible after the low fuel light comes on to get an idea of how many gallons are gone fromthe tnak when the light comes on. do the math, and estimate how mayn miles or kms that remianing amount of gas will get you. Then subtract at least 25% because the fuel pump may not be able to suck the tank completely dry.
...it's called "thermal expansion" and that's what 'heated' gasoline and vapors do....the extra "room" in the gas tank is there to allow for gas vapor expansion...remember, todays gas tanks are NOT vented to the atmosphere, so ALL gasoline "expansion" for both FLUID and VAPORS has to be accommodated...hence, the "extra" room which you're referring to....yes, you can "pump" a couple more gallons of "go-juice" in there (tank) but it's NOT a good idea to do so, especially in HOT weather when LOTs of FLUID and VAPOR expansion take place.

...have you ever walked out to your car on a hot summer day and smelled gasoline fumes? That's a SURE sign the vapors have over-come the gas-cap pressure relief and escaped (NOT good thing)...happens a lot here in southern states (California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas), especially if the fillup occured during the cool of night or early morning....when this happens: (1) you waste gasoline and (2) send unwanted hydrocarbons into the atmosphere.

On my 2009 1.8 Corolla Vibe, My light goes on with approximately 2 gallons still left in the tank. By the time I filled up last night, I could only squeeze in 11.7 gallons. The good book says that my tank holds 13.2 gallons. My fuel indicator was just at the very bottom of the E mark when I put in the 11.7 gallons. I guess I won't worry too much anymore knowing that I have approximately 60 miles to find a gas station when the light comes on.

Lots of $$$I think about that when I have seen people at the Giant Eagle Get 'n Go trying to fill it to the brim because they have $1.00 per gallon discount on their Giant Eagle Advantage card and want to save every last penny. As for me, when it clicks off I am done. Some also fill plastic gasoline containers. I don't need containers of extremely flammable liquids in my car or garage. Actually I rarely use my GE discounts because I don't trust their gasoline quality.

Any other type of gas I get 26-27mpg... on giant's gas I get 20-22mpg... I think they put the max amount of ethanol in their gas which lowers my mpg.

Seriously, I'm not about to pay somebody else to bring it here.OK - I admit - for my lawnmower, about once (maybe twice) a year I fill up my 2 gallon metal gasoline container and bring it home in my car. I fill this at a gasoline station that is about 1/2 mile from home. But I did buy a very expensive low profile thick steel gasoline container with a spring loaded opening that is supposed to be safer than the average tall easily tipped red tin or plastic gasoline can.As for a snow blower, I long ago determined that it was better to hire someone to shovel out my driveway the few times a year that is needed than to "invest" in and give garage space to a snow blower.

I keep fairly close tabs on my fuel on my 2008, and the largest fillup I've ever done was 11.599 gallons (probably 30 miles after the warning light came on). I always let the auto-shutoff define when I stop pumping.
http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=38788Filled to the top of the filler tube for that trip and on the refill.Fill up a Jerry can, wait for the reserve light to turn on, reset trip odometer, drive till it dies. Although I wouldn't push it too far past 50kms. Walking down the road with a Jerry can is one thing, hearing about it from the co-worker who drove by laghing at you is another!!!
My 2009 will seem to fire the low fuel light on when there's still about 11 to 12 litres left. It's actually a bit irritating that it has so much reserve - because it's essentially indicating empty when there's still almost 1/4 tank left there. My previous Sunfire seemed much more accurate - so when it read empty, I had to be sure I was near a gas station. It only had about 4 litres left when the light came on.15 years ago my first brand new car was an early build 1995 Dodge Neon. I was bad for running it low on a regular basis - almost like a game to see how far it could go on its puny 42 litre tank. I managed 678km one time - and it took 42.1L to fill. I had the first fuel pump replaced within the first year, and again about 6 months later. At the time it was my first fuel injected vehicle, and I wasn't aware of the cooling requirements.Based on that experience, I usually avoided running my 2002 Sunfire below 1/4 tank (accurately indicated) - and it still is running its original pump at over 250,000km now. I only had 37,000 on the Neon when I got rid of it.As long as the gas station is in a quiet location, I usually fill the last portion of the tank more slowly - so that I can hear the gas going in actually fill the tube just before it clicks off. Usually that's when I stop - or at most to the next dollar (which is usually much less than a litre). This usually allows me to get pretty accurate fuel consumption numbers from tank to tank. I seem to be varying between about 6.7 and 7.3 L/100km so far with my 2.4 & automatic. I'll be curious to see how badly the cold weather and crappy gas affect it soon. John
