I need advice about new tires

Post by zdkaiser »

So I am going to be buying some new tires here in the next month. Finally going to be getting rid of the stock RS-As after 40k. I was looking at getting an Ultra-High Performance All-Season tire. I was looking at the Fuzion VRi and the General Altimax. I was wondering what you all have going on your cars and what you like? I really just want a good tire that is quiet and handles well in wet/dry conditions. I have looked around on tire rack. com and just want some personal recommendations from the forum.Ideally I would buy the GY Tripletreads, but $116 per tire is a bit much for my budget. I was looking more in the $75-95 range. (I have 16inch tires)Any advice. I was really leaning towards the Fuzions but people say they are so noisy. I want to reduce as much noise as possible.Suggestions?

Hi and welcome to GV, if I haven't already said so... I'd like to help.... Are you planning on using snow tires in the winter or not? I always recommend it, but some are indifferent.. I'm a big fan of Kumho tires, I've owned a few sets and they've never failed to impress.. There are a few threads here you can look though to check out some deals on tires... I was recently put onto TireSavings.com by KeithVibe, they have some sweet deals on all sorts of tires.. They don't provide the shear amount of info that TireRack or Discount Tire does, but they don't charge the same either...

I'll be getting rid of my stock RSAs once the first snow is predicted. That will take me to no more than 20,000 miles. I plan on getting tire rack's favorite: Michelin Primacy MXV4. The Generals are right with the Primacy as far as ratings except in one critical category: treadwear. I'm also doubting the Generals would ride as quietly too. Costco keeps running $70 off a set, so once the first flakes fall, off come the RSA death donuts.

Buy them soon. Whatever you end up getting in your price range. The lower price tires are mostly made in China and the US Gov't is on the verge of adding a tax to Chinese tires which experts project will be about $10 per tire. Look carefully in small letters at the rim you'll find "made in China"http://www.ucdailynews.com/new....htmlh ... ....htmlAs with most policies, this one is quite controversial. If the tax goes through US tire makers will not reopen factories but most likely the Chinese manufacturing will move to some obscure country that doesn't have the tax applied to it.Dave

I am growing tired of looking up reviews/ratings for tires. I have decided I am just going to splurge and buy the GY Tripletreds. They sound amazing for the most part.

Those of us who've had the Tripltreads report some of the same problems: tire noise in spite of religious rotating & poor winter performance on icy/slick roads. I'll never buy them again, & I can't recommend them to anyone.

They sound amazing for the most part. That's what the tire companies are hoping for... You get sick of looking at things and just buy, un-informed, based on what "everyone else" has said.. It's a viscous cycle.. With that I ask if you are planning on running a winter tire or not? You know the cheapest winter tire will out perform the best A/S tire in the snow, right... ? It's true... You know, you might spend 500+$ on winter tires and wheels (it's recommended to put them on "take off" wheels so they aren't being stripped off wheels every season) How much is your insurance deductible? I bet it's in the 500$ range... If those winter tires saved you from ONE bender, they payed for themselves.. Yes, i'm pushing a winter tire purchase, winter is coming...lol... I have zero affiliation with any of the companies, I just try and help my Vibers to stay say and get the most out of what they drive.. Cars = Life, to me.. lolHow much is safely getting to your destination worth to you? Food for thought, good luck on your decisions.. Be safe... Cheers..

I have been doing my research, and from tirerack.com, genvibe, other car forums and the other reviews on the net, the GY TTs are supposed to be top notch. No, I am not going to run winter tires this season. While I agree that it is the preferred option for snow, I do not have any place to store my other tires. I live a somewhat nomadic lifestyle, and winter tires don't really mesh well.As for TTs on the ice, no tire is going to be good in those conditions. I will keep looking though

8.0 9.0 9.1 8.8 9.2 8.9 8.5 7.8 7.7 8.3 7.9 8.4 Goodyear Assurance TT8.3 8.7 8.7 8.7 9.1 8.7 7.9 7.1 7.3 9.0 8.9 9.2 Michelin Primacy MXV4The meaning to the numbers you can look up on tirerack. You are correct; the GY TT do stack up well against the Primacy. However, I still look hard at the last three numbers: comfort, noise, treadwear. In my opinion, and as a play on the commercial: "if it is noisy, it has Goodyear written all over it."

Not studded tire good, but highly commendable.. in plain old snow, unstoppable..
