Dreaded idle vibration...ugh..poor voltage?

Post by fingersbshreddin »

This is my first post on gen vibe , but i have been addicted to the site for a bit now You people do a great job here!I have an 06 base auto with 46,xxx miles. I am getting the dreaded idle vibration pretty bad. It has been like this since purchesed and it just drives me NUTS!! So far i have cleaned the Tb , Maf sensor , and changed the plugs. None of which has helped.ran some techron..changed oil..no helpVibrates hard in drive (only at idle), harder in reverse(driving and idle)..but not in N or P.i also notice my lights dim when the idle kicks in (comming to a stop)Also when i switch from park to drive or reverse...and when i pull the window switch up while it is already closed..(stressing the motor)I need help bad..as i have been pulling my hair out over this..plenty of sleepless nights wandering the board for answers.Any Help or direction would be greatly appreciated! Thanks FBS

1st welcome to the site! I'm assuming you left the neg. terminal off the battery for 10-15 minutes after cleaning the TB/MAF? I have the same car with 115Kms and only ran into a vibration issue after I installed the SRI.

Welcome! My '05 base auto will vibrate at idle sometimes, but by the sound of it you are experiencing this all the time. How did the plugs look when you changed them? If you took the negative terminal off the battery, it will vibrate pretty bad when you reconnect it. This is normal after disconnecting the battery. It will just take some time for the computer to reset itself.

Never herd of the problem... To be honest.. You mention voltage... do you have a volt meter? I would check idle voltage while at idle, then maybe have someone get in and put it in reverse and check.. Doesn't sound like a voltage issue unless its an IAC voltage issue...you throwing any codes? Have you had it scanned to see if the scanner would pick anything up? check the link in my sig, see if there is any troubleshooting guides in there for it.. BTW, i'm 60mi west of you.. lol.. welcome to GV..

Thx Sublimewind ..Where abouts do you live?Trying to think what the hell is 60 mi west of me..lolI don't have a volt meter. When i said that i meant power.I just assumed and used voltage to help explain...basicaly all the lights from speedometer to headlights dim 20% maybe..when the car goes into idle ..pulling up to a stop sign..when i switch gears ..from like park to reverse or drive..also when i engage the window up switch with the window already up..stressing the window motor.I have not had it scanned or have i had it taken to a dealer. It isn't throwng any codes. I heard there are soft codes? On my way home i noticed when i turned my ac on the idle completly balanced out and was..well great!!....What would that have to do with anything?Thx for the help!

Try cleaning the IAC valve. That is what controls the idle.

Check and change your tranny fluid. It sounds like something in the valvebody of the tranny is causing the torque converter to grab too hard at idle. The dimming lights would be caused by the extra load on the engine at an rpm in which the alternator isn't producing enough power.

i had the issue mine actually stalled once. i took the entire throttle body off cleaned it as you did not sure is you cleaned the idle control valve but that's what really helped me out. its attached to the throttle body but you need to open it up. also i installed a ground kit for better grounding and cleaned the old ones and put thermal electric grease on them all and it seemed to help a little. mine also didn't do it in park or neutral because of the rpms are slightly higher in neutral and part is basically the same as neutral. i would def clean the IAC valve if you didnt when you removed the TB cause it really helped me out. then again also you say when you come to a stop the lights dim, could be a bad a alternator. try pulling the battery out while its running.

I'm in the CMU area... a little further west.. I like the idea of maybe the torque converter is hangin up... does you idle seem low? I DON'T like the fact that your lights dim like that... but if the car is being pull down from normal idle speed, it seems likely....

Okay took it to a pontiac dealer. Well they only deal pontiac and are going out of buisness. So they only had basic techs working. We looked over my motor mounts and he said they looked good..So we went and fired up an 05 brand new on the lot still..it idled just as heavy in park but my dumb a** forget to have him throw it in drive and reverse..lolbut in park it seemed the same..idkhe said the lights dimming from the window are normal..but said that i should take it to a local place..he recommended one...and have the electrical checked...he said when they dim at idle and gear change it sounds like a bad or coroded ground.Anyone know where all the grounds are so i can check them?

Grounds are EVERYWHERE man, everywhere... you just have to look for things bolted to the body... They can hide too, easily.. lol.. Again, you might want to look through the troubleshooting guide in the link in my Sig... I think there is one in there...
