Member in Trouble!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by NascarXprt »

ok, so this week we have started to get some rain. well today started off good (besides the rain) and most of the day went well with out any hitches. but about 2 in the afternoon trouble started to appear. my speakers just went out all 4, although sound was coming from the subs i start to assume that the head unit is on the fritz, well about 10-15 min later everything started to work again. so i go on and do a couple of errands and as i get back in the car and start her up the speakers went out again, the same 4 in the doors. sound is comming out of the subs, which i think is good, but no sound out of the speakers. so now that i am home i tried resting the head unit( nothing happened), tried unplugging all connections to the head unit (nothing happened), tried turning off all acc.'s and fog light switch and dome light controler, and A/C controls and nothing happened (the last time this happened was 4 months ago and no rain, i turned off the A/C controls and turned off the head unit and restarted the car and everything was back to normal). so then i take out my head unit and put the old original head unit and see if it was infact a bad aftermarket head unit and ............ no sound period (obviously i cant hook up the subs since there are no Aux. inputs in the original head unit). so now i am up a creek as to what the hell is going on with my speakers and radio!!!!!! :arrrggggghhh: someone please help meeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^^^^^ That would be my guess as well, if that is the case you would have 3 options 1. You could do an amp bypass harness and run the hu power to the speakers. 2. You could replace the factory amp with another factory amp.3. You could pick up a good aftermarket amp that would trump the factory solution and also give you reason to upgrade the factory speakers down the road. Sublimewind had a link on some Cadence amps and he could point you in the direction of some good deals if thats the route you choose.Aron

Does your vibe still have the factory door speakers and factory door speaker wiring? Did you just use an adapter to plug in the new hu to the stock radio connector? Was your factory head unit working ok when you replaced it? seems like its not the hu or speakers, so what's left? Wiring and connectors I guess. Not sure where (besides the hu connector) there is a common point that would affect all four speakers.

Sounds like you have a door speaker shorting to the door... or a wire getting pinched.. I used to have the same issue... Used MDF to make speaker spacers for my doors... Well the MDF got wet and swelled, it swelled enough to move the speaker enough to touch the terminals to the door, causing the amp to go into short circuit protect.. Not my speakers, but you get the idea...

if it was one speaker shorting out, wouldn't he be able to adjust the balance or fade to quiet that speaker and then get sound out of two of the others?

well yesterday the radio came back then today (with some rain again) it went out.. and to answer your other questions; i have replaced all OEM speakers with Dual's 6.5" 3-way "Illuminite" speakers and i am still using the original wires for it, also i am using the original front door speaker spacer thingy, and the back doors speakers are using the spacers supplied with the speakers.my speakers are also wired to the original speaker wiring plugs.

If a speaker is shorted, it wouldn't matter which source for power is used, it's still a short.. Nascar, do you have a DMM (digital multi meter?) If so, check each set of speaker wires for resistance... You should read about 4ohm on each set.. If you read something crazy like 1ohm or 16ohm, anything like that you may have found the problem.. I didn't realize you where running the speakers from the HU, which is fine, it's an amp all the same... again, I hope there was/is some sort of short circuit protection on it, or it may have released the magic smoke...

Try pulling the HU and with it playing (radio, no CD skippage), wiggle the wires around, maybe something is going on there too...

welp i have found the problem. once i opened up the driver rear door, the speakers started working again, so there must be a pinced wire in the door area. thanks for all of your help guys.
