I'll update with pictures if needed, but to upper right of my auto shifter there is a "thing" that I'm wondering about. It appears as though a cover of some sort has been knocked off it. Now it's a quarter inch "button" that I can depress about a half inch or so.Can anyone help me out? I hasn't dropped an oil slick behind the car or ejected my wife from the passenger seat, so I don't think it's anything spectacular, but I'm really curious. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
It locks your transmission so it can not be moved I believe when it is in park. I assume when you car is in park, press the button and it will unlock the transaxle. have a look here:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=369&page=2

Thank you! That's been bugging me for a week now. BTW, I like your sig. Had a Brit growing up and my wife and I just got our first dog, a rescue from down south, last year.
You know how you cannot shift out of park without stepping on the brake? IF that interlock should fail you can remove the cover and depress a button there and still be able to Shift out of Park and drive the car.Click on this link and get the owners manual page on this topic. That cover was left out of a lot of 2003s when the dealer missed the part attached to something else in a little bag and threw it away. They had to order another one for me once we figured out it was missing something.
My cap was missing when I got my Vibe, bugged me.I called the Pontiac dealer for replacement: Part was $11.47Toyota Dealer for same part for Matrix: $1.81Part pops in with a satisfying 'click'
