What is a good radar detector to get. I want one that isn't huge and looks like there is a UFO on my dash .. I also don't want to spend a huge load on $$$ either.. I don't even know where to start... Im 19 and my insurance is already around $700 for six months.... don't need a ticket to double it.. Thanks..

So if you don't want a ticket, don't drive like an idiot. It is much easier to avoid tickets if you don't speed than if you rely on a radar dector.

I can only speak from my own experience: back when I was younger I had a radar detector, and I used to get lots of tickets. Those things make you feel invincible. Cops know the game and they play it well. Furthermore, I think you are less likely to talk your way out of a ticket if the traffic cop sees a radar detector on the dash.Just my 2 cents.
Good luck getting past the laser guns the cops use now with a radar detector.

A few years back I was talking to my aunt about radar detectors. She has spent the past 15 years as a Sheriff Deputy, and said that even with all the new technology in radar detectors they still don't work the way they claim to. By the time your radar detector goes off, you've already been caught.

Personally, I got a Cobra radar/laser detector about 6 years ago and I have never gotten a speeding ticket since I've had it (and before I had it for that matter). I typically drive 5 mph over the speed limit (depending on the area) and there have been many times where it starts going off because there's a cop sitting somewhere so I slow down and go right by and I have never been pulled over. I guess it could just be because I wasn't doing like 10+ over, but IMO they work. Just my $.02 though.

I use an old Whistler 1734. The number display is slowly dying but it works fine nonetheless. I go by sound anyways. There's a diffrence between speeding and driving like an idiot, stay out of category 2 and you'll be fine. I also hate wires cluttering up the dash so I put the radar detector in the top left corner of the windshield. It's easier to hear it beep when you've got the window down or tunes cranked. I'd buy an Escort or Valentine 1 but they're a little pricey here and since mine's saved my rear enough times I see no reason to drop $400+ on something new. Having a radar detector can help but knowledge of where/when/how the cops deal with speeders in your area can be just as valuable. PS: All radar detectors are useless against laser, deal with it. (Although, if you have the dough, you can buy yourself a highly illegal radar jammer or laser jammer)
Thank you very much to those of you who actually gave me an answer that I could use. I don't drive like an idiot.. ten over is not that bad.. sorry that most of you are the one's who make me mad because you go ten UNDER the speed limit. Thanks again to those who helped..
We drive like that because it makes people mad. At least I do.I drive five to ten over everywhere I go, except certain areas. When someone is speeding up behind me, following too close, trying to push me to go faster or changing lanes repeatedly to jockey ahead. I slow down and match speed with someone in the other lane, just to make them irate. Should I do this? Nope. Do I? Heck yes. Hope to see you out there.

Haha I do the same to people who fly up behind me and stay right on my rear .. Lots of times I go even slower then the limit.. It happend this morning.. in town I go about five over.. Its only the highways that I prefer to go ten over..

I love messing with idiot drivers like that!Quote, originally posted by star_deceiver »I also hate wires cluttering up the dash so I put the radar detector in the top left corner of the windshield. I agree with having knowledge. It's pretty easy for me because I live in the boonies and the cops pretty much sit in the same spots and all. My laser detector has gone off only a few times over the past 6 years. I think because I live where I do, cops around here don't really use lasers. Either way, all I know is I have never gotten a speeding ticket so in my mind radar detectors work .Quote, originally posted by 09vGT »Thank you very much to those of you who actually gave me an answer that I could use. You're welcome! Target sells Cobra radar detectors. That's where I got mine. I paid, I want to say, about $70.00 6 years ago. They usually have a few different kinds and they are all under $100.00.

Read here, you decide... lol... My Subie guys are all about the speed... http://forums.nasioc.com/forum...27095The best ones are the ones integrated into the car with nothing more than a tiny display and speaker
I drive 5-10 mph over the speed limit almost everywhere I go and I haven't been pulled over for over 3 years. Different areas warrant different driving speeds and styles. To me it isn't worth the $$$. Not having tickets and accidents on your driving record is another great way to have your insurance rates go down, or just wait until you get older then your rates go down too.

That is why it is called a speed "limit". Anyone who drives 10 mph over AND gets mad at those who go 10 under IMO ARE driving like an idiot.

I use the Escort 9500ix. It's a bit spendy @ $430 or so, but worth it. Here's why... EVERYTHING sets off radar detectors. From automatic door openers at the local supermarket to those "your speed is" things along the road. You tend to ignore the warnings (hence wasting your money on a detector), or take every warning seriously & always drive the speed limit (hence wasting your money on a detector). The 9500ix uses GPS technology. It knows where you are all the time, and it knows exectly where the radar is coming from. If it senses radar on the exact same frequency at the exact same location 3 times, it locks it out. In my first week's commute I went from about 10 warnings a day to 0. It also has a built in database of every red light camera & speed trap in the US... again, thanks to the GPS. You really do get what you pay for.

The BEST bang for the buck is the escort 8500 x50. I think they are 100-200 now?The top three:escort 9500xiBell STiV1I have the 9500 and love it. It has been tested to have the least amount of false alarms. I like the built in gps. The v1 dual arrows is a huge gimmick, when I get hit I dont care where its from I want to know how fast I'm going and slow down. The 9500 gives you your speed when you get hit. 9500 also has ability to block out false signals with the press of a button and store locations of speed cameras, traps etc. The top 3 though range from $400-500.
You can buy them at Future shop or Best Buy, that's the only places (currently in business) that I have seen them. As for used, you'd have to check every pawn shop everyday for a month to even have a chance at seeing one. And seeing as radar detectors are only legal in BC and Alberta, Boxing day is the only time you'll see a sale.I'd have to be in the States for over a week to be able to bring one back without paying duty. I know, I've seen them for sale down there for under $250US... But that's 7+ tanks of gas and Vegas ain't that far!!!
I can second the Escort line I have had the passports and I currently own a Solo by far the best detectors I have had. I have had K40 (dash mount), Bel, and Whistler, yet the Escort line has never failed me. Though it was nice when K-40 reimbursed me for my ticket. In all honestly I cant remember the last time I have used my detector, probably 3-4 months, I just decided to drive a lil slower.Aron
