Honda Fit

Post by ned23 »

Last weekend I drove a 2009 Honda Fit with 8,000 mi on it on a round trip that totalled about 12 hours. It was the higher-level trim version with Navi and DTC. 5-spd Stick. For a sub-compact, the seats are actually reasonably comfortable and spacious. The front passenger area feels huge thanks to a sloping windshield with corner windows. The bad part of the corner windows is that they increase reflection off of the windshield. The car basically drives like an economy car. Steering is very responsive but it does not have independent rear suspension and corners like a boat. The biggest disappointment was the Fit's built-in "Trip MPG" guage, which over the course of the weekend rose and rose from 37 mpg until it reported I was getting a "trip average" of 41 mpg. After filling it up twice and getting out the calculator, the actual mpg was 34.7! In a 5-spd 4-cyl with 116 HP. (removed)?! The most embarassing part of the trip was getting my first speeding ticket in over a decade courtesy of a local speed trap in Rural KY. 50 in a 35. Was on Rt. 27 which fluctuated from 45-55, so I had the cruise set at 50. The speed changed without any warning whatsoever to 35 mph and of course the officer was sitting just 500 ft. beyond the sign, with a clear view of my front plate (KY has no front plates...)A speeding ticket...in a Honda Fit. Oh, the indignity.

That sounds like the road to the Outer Banks, NC. Down route 150 for a good hour and a half-two hours past the Tyson and Perdue factories. When you are on open road in fields, the limit is 50. Come up to a small town area and it crashes to 25. And the local Sheriffs love out of towners.I test drove a Fit when I was looking for a car (bought the Matrix instead) a few years back when they were new. Sport with the 15" wheels and 5 speed. Not a bad little car, but overall a little small for what I was looking for.

My wife wanted to buy a Fit but we ended up with the Vibe instead. There were little things that didn't quite fit in the Fit and it wasn't as comfortable as the Vibe. I also like the extra size of the Vibe.

...sorry, but the name "Fit" always conjurs up the mind-sight of "...epileptic fit..." and "...Auntie-Emm had a hissy fit..." to me.

For the price of a Fit, I'd rather buy a Hyundai Accent. Spend a lot less money on pretty much the same car!

And the Elantra Touring (a SW like the Vibe) is very versatile.

You might have a chance to get this ticket thrown out. I know in PA they are not allowed to run a speed trap with in 500ft of a speed limit change. Question is did he clock you right as you passed or as soon as he seen you? If it's the latter than it's prior to the 500ft rule and the ticket is invalid.
