2009-2010 Vibe Rear Lid/Deck On Rear Hatch Issue (Non-GT)

Post by ou.grizzly »

Purchased a 2009 Vibe new 3 weeks ago and it was missing paint on the hatch next to the rear lid and hatch glass... Dealer painted it and took care of all the scratches (took them almost 3 weeks to do so)... Picked the vehicle up Friday night, drove 30 miles home from the dealer and the it was down to bare metal again...Dealer this morning basically accused me of doing the damage... After discussion they decided to fix it... I went to another area dealer and looked at other Vibes... They also have the same issue... I called the dealer and body shop - brought it to their attention... I stated they need to contact service to see if there is a fix for the issue per GM or if it is known... There is a bulletin out for it, I just do not know the number... So heads up folks... Bought the Vibe 3 weeks ago and will not have it back until later this week... Payment is due next week and never drove the vehicle...

ouch. I'd be on the phone to GM demanding that they cover your first payment or something to that effect. I'd at least get some free floor mats out of the deal . Got any pictures of this paint issue?

here you go#09-08-51-001: Chipped Paint on Liftgate Near Spoiler (Replace Seal) - (Jan 8, 2009) Subject:Chipped Paint on Liftgate Near Spoiler (Replace Seal)Models:2009 Pontiac Vibe (Non-GT) Built Prior to 09/25/2008 ConditionSome customers may comment that the paint on the liftgate is chipping at the outboard ends of the spoiler.CauseThis condition may be caused by the rubber seal(s) on the underside of the spoiler being positioned too far inward. This may allow the spoiler to make contact with the liftgate and cause paint chipping on one or both sides.CorrectionInspect and repair the vehicle using the following procedure:1.Remove the rear spoiler. Refer to Rear Spoiler Replacement in SI. 2.On the underside of the spoiler, remove the out of position rubber seal(s) from the outboard side(s) showing paint chipping. 3.Clean the adhesive residue from the underside of the spoiler using a general purpose adhesive cleaner. 4.Install new rubber seal(s) in the correct position as shown. Ensure that the grove in the seal is over the edge of the spoiler. Important: Do not repair the paint without the seal repair completed. 5.Repair the chipped paint. 6.Install the spoiler. Apparently my 2009 GT was repaired for something like this before I purchased it. I got a repair history identifying a TSB for:Cracked/Broken Liftgate window.Ref TSB 09-08-48-004Not sure what the details are though.

I just checked and mine has the chipped paint... I wonder if I can talk one of my local dealers into fixing it, but installing a GT spoiler kit in place of the stock spoiler when they put it back together...

Tried that as I told the dealer and GM I would pay $150.00 towards a GT spoiler... They sated they would give it to me for cost; $200.00 including tax...Told them nope... Talk to your dealer, take it in and give them the TSB # as they will repair it...

I'll try to get one up a.s.a.p. I haven't even taken the first pic of my new sccot yet. Between work & t-storms, the timing is a little off. OH, WAIT, I just scanned something from the Pontiac site. Not the best of scans, but I think you'll get it. The place we're talking about is between the 2 arrows, on BOTH sides of the hatch (passenger & driver's side). It is right where the spoiler meets the metal by the glass.I hope it helps!

At first, it looked like it was just some dried wax that didn't get removed. Nope. It was the primer and then down to bare metal.

I looked at the"spoiler" that is a standard part of the back hatch on the base Vibe 1.8L and do not see how anything like that could happen. It moves with the hatch when opened. Is this limited to some fancier "spoiler"?

That's what I thought, & that's why it took me a while to find it. I actually walked away thinking I didn't have a problem, but went back to check again. Just as I was going to walk away AGAIN, it caught my eye. Sure enough! Something straaaannnnge is going on back there

I looked closely at my 2009 1.8L and there is one, about a 3/4 inch long, pencil lead wide area like you showed on the drivers side near the bottom of where the spoiler is. I still can't see what could be rubbing to do that.

Called the dealer today and guess the vehicle was done, asked if they test drove it to see if it was fixed and got a call about 2 hrs later... It is hitting on 1 side now instead of 2...This will be the 3rd attempted repair in 4 weeks and I still yet have the vehicle... Dealer stated they will order a GT Spoiler, see if GM will pick up the cost, and if it will fix the issue... 4 weeks!!! That's a long time for such a simple (in my mind) problem. When I had the Vibe in for the tear in the seat, it was done the same day. I'll just wait 'till I get the GT spoiler, might just fix it myself...

Few issues were the vehicle was delivered new with scratched in the clear coat in various spots on the car. Took the dealer 2 weeks to get those straight as they re-scratched the vehicle during washing or drying various times. Yeah... It has been fun...

I inspected my vibe yesterday and luckily there appears to be no problem with chipped paint around the spoiler. I've had the car since early March 2008 so it was definitly built in the problem time-frame. 24,300km and counting.

Just checked mine and sure enough there is about an inch long chip under the left side of the spoiler. My car has a born on date of 08-08(it an 09).Called the dealer and scheduled to bring it in thursday morning. Gave them the TSB info too. Looks like it just needs to have a bigger seal installed or something to keep the spoiler from rubbing the paint off the hatch. They are gonna have to give me a rental too. Hope this turns out ok, I havent had to deal with any warranty issues yet with this car or dealer.

Hi ou.grizzly - noticed you are getting the clear bra put on. Just thought I'd give you a heads up from somebody that already had it done. Not sure if you have fog lights or not. I don't. After the clear bra was installed I waited about a week and then took it thru the car wash. It looked like high pressure water blasting into the fog light blank pried up the film on both sides. On the driver side it was the low outside corner. It lifted it on the bevel, not on the face of the bumper, if that makes sense. On the passenger side it lifted a very small amount right in the upper outside corner. Once lifted, dirt was trapped under the film.Something to watch for or maybe have the installer trim it out a bit in advance. The installer was able to trim it out just a bit and it looks fine and essentially undetectable - still looks like it could be machine cut even though it doesn't match from side to side. Also, I'd recommend having the entire hood done, if possible. The quarter hood is a bit more noticeable than I'd like. I got a quote after it was all done (to have the front removed and the hood redone in full) but they want $280 on top of the $550 I already paid. Not gonna do it. I got the impression that it would have been much less than an extra $280 if I had it done in the first place. Something to consider.

Believe a few other MI Members here have dealt with them. What the dealer should so is pull all the Vibes in, repair then per the TSB, and test them, and then fix them accordingly before delivery. That is a good price for a Vibe, month payment for mine is 330.87 cents. No GM Discount though, have a 2009, and a 2.4L Engine. Make sure the dealer DRIVES the vehicle before you get it back as they need to install a GT Spoiler to fix the issue like they did with mine; GM did eat the cost.

It would make sense for them to ensure all cars they were selling that had the issue were fixed before they sold them. They need to install the gt spoiler in order to fix the issue? I hope they do that for mine....I really do like the car.....it's great on gas and it scoots fairly good for a 1.8 four cyclinder....

If that does not do it, service just went a head and ordered a GT Spoiler. Took 5 days to get in from the factory.

I went to the dealership today and they said that since it is only a little spot, which it is, it isn't too big, about a half an inch and in the crack of the hatch and spoiler, that they would order the touch up paint, since they didn't have the steel blue in the shop.....So they are going to do the touch up, not refinish the spot....They said I could keep the touch up paint after they fixed the spot....Hopefully it works....and doesn't chip again.....it seems like it's a problem with the spoiler rubbing against the hatch, most likely when you are at higher speeds.....Does anyone have any suggestions on waxes or other products to keep my metallic paint super shiny....???Something easy that I wouldn't possibly mess up.....Thanks in advance

Take the vehicle to a different dealer such as Somerset Pontiac in Troy, MI. They will fix it accordingly. To be honest, I would also contact Gm Customer Service and report them as they should fix it per TSB which is to refinish the upper portion of the hatch. DO NOT let them apply "touch-up" paint to the vehicle. Need some help, send me a PM and we can talk more. I am near Macomb so we can always meet and talk. - Grizz.

Thanks for bringing this issue up and thanks to all for clearly describing where to look. I've had my 2009 Vibe for a year now and had never noticed the missing paint until this morning. Guess I'm off to the dealer this week!

Ok, so I am going to contact my local dealer to get this fix asap.... what is my argument to fix it right without touch up paint? The TSB posted by other member stated "5.Repair the chipped paint. "... Does that mean repaint or use touch up paint? The word "Repair" doesn't exactly state repaint the chipped around...Please advise, so I have a good argument when the dealer dont agree. thx! This will be the second TSB once I own the car~ I guess that's what we get for buying a first year model~

Took it to my dealer today and they told me they will have to check with GM Canada to see if they will pay for the repair first~Here is a photo of the actual chip:
