Dynomax Super Turbo is a good one. It will give a nice light mellow rumble at idle and will not drone at highway speeds. I have had the super turbo and loved the sound. I always recommend that one to people. You can see it in the poor man's mod thread: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=24144

Thanks Blue,I assume you have a 2.4l engine too, so aside from a nice sound did you notice any increase in performance, what about gas mileage?I made a mistake years ago when I installed a hi flow gibson muffler along with changing out the stock pipes with something bigger, the truck lost some low end torgue but it hauled a$$ @3400 rpm so Ill stick with a good muffler but leave the plumbing alone,BTW how much did ur local muffler shop charge u to have it installed??

I also recommend the Dynomax Super Turbo. When I had my Vibe that's what I installed and was very happy with the sound.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vc8DF8oQ ... 8klj7kQ8pQ

Replacing the muffler is mainly for sound. Performance ad MPG will see a slight improvement depending on how you drive. I think they charged me $50+/- for the install (I provided the muffler).

The cat should quiet the exhaust down enuff to just use a resonator tip,no muffler.

A good choice would also be a Flowmaster Serie 60 muffler if you are looking for a deep mellow tone and not to loud. You should see a significant bump in power and torque in the low mid RPMs. Every car I've designed a system with a Flowmaster has seen an average of 2-4MPG increase in fuel economy. The last one went from an average of 29-30mpg highway to 32-34mpg combined city/hwy and required down shifting less to get around in commuter in traffic. To further reduce high frequencies use a resonated tip. If you are getting a lot of cabin resonance try extending the tip out past the body work if the car by an inch of so. You could also us a chambered resonator to further deepen the tone of the exhaust and extend the power gains in the low to mid RPMs. A good choice here would be Moroso or Edlebrock bullet style "racing" mufflers. If you really want to get into you could have the system built with a merge pipe or squeeze tube installed just after the cat to extend mid range torque without sacrificing top end power.

Good info Dragon, I always thought flows were for muscle cars and if you wanted to rumble down the road. Can I still hear my stereo with Flow60's??My goal is to get a hi efficient oiless air filter up front and a better exhaust at the back.I cant go crazy like I did with the truck years ago, the X took most of my Mod $$ now,LOL!! So guys if you have anymore suggestions for a "poor man's air/exhaust 2.4L system" lets hear it.BTW pls no pvc pipe mods, tried that sometime ago,it almost......thats another story.

Finally got my Dynomax Universal muffler which I ordered online. Its a little shorter than stock but the muffler shop had no problem fabricating new hangers for it. All in all Im very impress by the mellow rumble @idle and not too loud growl when you punch it, we shall see about performance and mpg down the road,a sweet MOD for the "last of its kind".Whats next?

I got a borla Boomer off of ebay a few weeks ago (good price). It has a 4.5 out let which looked huge when I got out of the box (Didn't want to look like a D-bag) but on the car all of my car buddies agreed it looked pretty good. Mr. Muffler welded on a hanger and fitted really well for $50. All of my friends seeing it, thought it would sound ricer. When they heard it they were all impressed. I love the nice low tone and seems to really benefit most for passing power, which i always disliked about the base (i felt like it has none). I would recommend this universal muffler in a heartbeat!
