Any Pop-Up campers that work for Vibe

I've seen the threads on the teardrop campers; very nice. I was just wondering if any of the really small pop-ups are light enough to work with the Vibe?

If it's 1500lbs or less the Vibe should have no problem pulling it. I even think there is someone who is pulling a pop-up that is 1650lbs if I remember correctly. I would highly recommend a tranny cooler.

I think you will find a LOT of Pop-Up campers well under the 1500 lbs. that Vibes are rated for. You might even find some even smaller Pop-Up campers made for motorcycles. The problem that I would have with one on a Vibe is most are 7' wide! We had one that we towed with our truck like it wasent even there, but it was still WIDE! I dont like Wide because it seems like the times that we want to go camping it is road construction time. I dont like and kind of even panic when the road narrows down in construction zones.My other camper is a slide in truck camper that is not any wider then the mirrors on our truck,... so...Weight wise, I think you will find plenty of Pop-Up campers will work for ya.

Anything small will work. My (Old and ugly) trailer is 13 feet long when closed, weighs about 700 pounds and towed fine behind the Sunfire. The Vibe is rated at 1500 pounds so I can't see it being a problem.http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=38524

thanks folks. this really opens up possibilities. Great suggestion on the tranny cooler....I'm also going to see if some are thinner than 7'. the camper is only for my dog and me while we're (well, not my dog) jamming at bluegrass festivals...though I'm moving to Portland, ME...that will shorten the camping season as compared to my current home of Asheville, NC.

WARNING, , some of the nicer , larger, " pop-up " campers you will see, look ideal, but they can be quite heavy. TOO heavy to tow in my opinion.Like the trailer that someone else posted, look up " teardop trailer, online. Many people have bought the plans & built their own. I would only use a trailer with at least 12" wheels. Another simple option I have seen, is to get a long pick-up truck camper cover [ shell, topper ] & mate it to a utility trailer frame that you can buy from Tractor Supply, etc. Build sides up on trailer about 18" high, [cover the sides for waterproofing, if needed ] & to the correct dimensions of the camper cover, & install. You can remove it when you just need a utility trailer for hauling. Yes, you cannot stand up inside it, but like cheaper " live-aboard boats, you " crawl " into bed.

Esteban. That is really good information. You know, I may just try to build that "camper". I love the dual purpose idea of the trailer and I don't mind not being able to stand up. Hey, as long as it'll keep the rain off me when I"m sleeping and not flood...I'm good.By the way, do you know of any pictures or plans for the unit you describe.

Keep in mind that the towing capacity is of the entire TRAILER, not only the basic shell and wheels but of EVERYTHING that is in it, food, clothes, life's little necessities, etc. This will all add up to multiple 100's of pounds.Weigh it when you are ready to roll, you'll find a LOT of trailers exceed the recommended towing weight.Dave

BUT, it really is only good for 2 people that really like each other. You could always pop a tent alongside, but the A/C wouldn't do much good for those people.

Has anyone had any experience with a Scamp? There is a used one near me, in great shape for cheap... The 13 footers weigh about 1200 lbs empty - so it would be right at the 1500 lbs with gear etc.

That would put it at the max capacity. And with the wind resistance you'd encounter towing it you're liable to end up jack knifed in the ditch!
