A couple weekends ago, I repainted the radio bezel, power door and window silver things and the silver thing to the left of the instrument cluster. Everything turned out really good. (You can check the pics in my garage.) I decided to also paint the chrome trim around the grill and the chrome strips next to the HVAC controls. I prepped them just the same as the others AFA sanding and stuff are concerned. THis time they turned out really dark and was pretty displeased with the results. There was, however, two new variables.Variable 1: After one, almost two coats, I ran out of the actual base coat that came with the kit and used Duplicolor for Plastics. It wasn't as flat of a black and had a little shine to it.Variable 2: The other pieces are black plastic painted with the silver over them. When i sanded those, some of the paint came off, some didn't, but it was scuffed well enough to promote adhesion. These pieces were a silver plastic, no paint. They seemed to have a different feel than the other pieces. I had to use a coarser grit and it scuffed ok.Now my question is, which variable caused this problem? Also, would I be better off buying new pieces and trying again or would painting over everything just work as long as I use only the supplied base coat?

They likely use a different plastic and different processes to paint/chrome each... This means your results could easily be different, between the 2 different types of parts.. did you prime first? Using a different paint can easily cause your problem.. you said you ran out of one and started using another... that's pretty logical.. that it would be different I mean... AFA fixing them, try a plastic safe stripper, I know they make citrus based ones now. Go on a facts finding trip to HD and see what you can see.. ? You "should" be able to prime and paint over just about whatever you want..
