2009 Vibe Air Bag Light

Maybe I've lost it, but after searching here and reading the applicable sections in the Owner's Manual several times, it still isn't absolutely clear in my mind about whether the Air Bag ON light is to come on and stay on whenever a passenger is sitting in that seat.Any help will be appreciated.

i think it's suppose to say "airbag on" when there's a passenger which means the airbags will deploy properly on the passenger side in case of an accident. when i have my backpack on the passenger seat, the "airbag off" light will come on. i guess it feels that the "occupant" isn't seated properly and will not engage the airbags until it's properly seated. when nothing's on the seat then there's no light.
