quote:My guess is that it will be near identical to the hood scoop on the GT-R pictured in the story on the front page.If that's the "Ram Air" hood, I'm not impressed. Too small and close to the hood to be seriously effective.
quote:If that's the "Ram Air" hood, I'm not impressed. Too small and close to the hood to be seriously effective. It's a 1.8 liter. It doesn't need a very big opening. Another thing is any place the engine can pull in the outside air without pulling in the air from the hot engine bay the more HP you will make. For every 10 degrees drop in air temp entering the engine you make 1 HP more. They got a 10 HP difference from the ram air compared to stock. You said it's to close to the hood to do anything? How do you figure this? Your only pulling in outside air. This set up is better than an under hood or even a under car scoop. It doesn't get any cooler than having the air sucked right from the hood of the vehicle.
The opening is too low and close to the hood to create any ram air effect. It has to do with Fluid Dynamics. Air is a fluid (not all fluids are liquids). Due to surface tension, air doesn't travel fast when it's very close to the surface. It actually creates a layer of turbulent air just at the surface. To get any ram air effect you would need the opening at the leading edge of the hood with no flat surface in front of it or you would need the opening a few inches above the hood. This is why Pro-Stock hood scoops are so high. Most air hitting the front of the car will flow up and over that opening in the hood. Most of that HP gain is from the revised and less restrictive air box and intake tube.

quote:I mean that the turbo kit will not be using the stock air box, so a little opening in your hood isn't going to do anything. Also a CAI type filter will come with the turbo kit. YES NO?Not sure if it will come with a CAI or if it will use the stock breather system. Yes I want a turbo and I will have some type of CAI on it. Much better to suck in as cool as air as possable before the turbo gets is compresses it and makes it even hotter than it all ready was.I'd like to hook the Ram air up to the turbo if possable. Plus I think the Ram air looks tough. It'll have a very performance sound coming from the Ram air opening also. Have you ever heard a CAI at WOT? A Ram air system would sound sweat.

This is why Pro-Stock hood scoops are so high.I can understand what you are saying but the benifits out weigh the negitives. Just pulling in the cooler air will make a noticable difference. In all honesty I have read that you need to be going over 100 MPH to get any real performance gain and then it's only about 1 to 2 % HP increase. No one drives at 100 MPH or more for very long. So it's really just for sucking in the colder more dense air.
quote:Here we go with the whole warm air cold air thing. You will not gain much regardless of ram air or "colder outside air" with a CAI the gain you get is more from the fact that the air intake is less restrictive, not that your incoming air temp is -2 degress colder! The engine management computer compensates regardless.Your half right. Less restriction and cooler air mean more power. Injen has a CAI out that makes around 10 to 12 more HP over stock. The Ram air system makes about the same over stock.
quote:Sources are telling me that the Ram Air hood has been OK'd for sale as an SPO option. Probably by the end of the year.- MikeI'm curious as to what happened to this ...I want this hood. I want it now.
When I went ot the dealer for my last oil change, I saw a flyer with a Cavalier and a Vibe with RAM air hoodThe hood on the Vibe is the same as the SLP one.I ask the sales rep if the Street Force hood for the Vibe is built by SLP and he cannot confirmed it, but he told me it can be possible.
Darn I really really dislike the design of the SLP hood. Oh well ... there go my dreams, shattered into a million peices like those of a a small chicken entering a jet engine in flight...

YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
Heh, the image is actually hilarious. I saw it in aviation class - albiet it was a frozen chicken being thrown into the spinning turbine of a Boeing 777. I laughed for days, the thing just disintegrated
look my sniggies, i had a strizz-oke in my brizz-ain okay, you know what im saying. so i cant move all good. but thanks for mentioning that .thank you very much.athf4evr. click here! you know you want to!!!

cold air really doesnt do that much. It wont make more then a 1 HP difference and thats definitely not noticable. What makes a difference is on a CAI is the 3 inch tubing, the smooth tube on the inside, and less restrictive filter.
Admin II, where are the posts from "fritzburg" that you are replying to? I don't see them in this thread and have noticed similar "missing posts" in a few other threads the last few days.NovaResource, are you sure you're not just a bit biased against non-SLP hoods? I would think that air flow patterns over the car would also contribute, or detract from, the benefit of any specific ram air design depending on the pressure of the air in the area of said scoop. Looking at the Cowl Induction on early 70's Chevelle's at first glance it would seem this backwards scoop shouldn't have any benefit. However haven rode in a Chevelle, before and after a cowl induction hood was installed, I can vouch for the effectiveness of scooping in the high pressure air at the base of the windshield!I don't dislike the SLP design, but I don't like it enough to pay for it either. If the price was right on the GTR style ram air hood I'd be interested though. Hopefully Pontiac did some testing when creating the GTR hood to design a scoop and select a location that increases performance as well as it looks.
well it may look like an eagle to you but i always thought it kinda looked like a dragon or something...actually it reminds me of the insigna on the ruger guns...anyway everyone always refered to those hood decals as "chickens" i liked them myself, always thought they were cool...thought about putting them on my buick riv but that would be overkill, just like the spinner hubcaps my daughter bought for me to put on for mom's day!lol...gotta have fun with your tin ya know!
ps...talked to parts at the local dealer and they seem to think that because slp is a licensed supplier and are building the hoods for the ga and the yukon, that they would be supplying the vibe too...they are very hyped about perf parts for vib.
quote:NovaResource, are you sure you're not just a bit biased against non-SLP hoods? Not really. I wanted the SLP hood before I won it. I don't like the look of GTR hood at all. However, I don't know If I would have spent $700 for the SLP hood had I not won it. I was hpoing for a price closer to $400-500 range. The hood on my Nova was less than $300.quote:Hopefully Pontiac did some testing when creating the GTR hood to design a scoop and select a location that increases performance as well as it looks. Not really. The scoop location was dictated by the factory air box location. You'll notice the scoop is directly over it. The SLP hood openings aren't directly over the box to give a more symetrical (and better in my opinion) apperance but the SLP hood does have the outlet under the hood directly over the factory air box.
