Acceleration Lag

Post by MajorAD »

Just got a 2010 base 2.4 auto vibe and I notice there is a lag when you step on the gas.Is this normal? Feels like there is something holding this engine back, air filter, muffler???

Shift it out of drive and into 2 or 1, push the right pedal to the floor and shift the gears yourself. Don't let the engine fall below 4000. What's holding it back is the transmission...

Actually, I think it has everything to do with the 5-speed auto. I'm not sure the programming of the shift points is quite ready for public consumption and is the only gripe I've found with my new '09.In general, when in normal drive mode, I think it has very poor low throttle manners... it hunts on deceleration, it jumps abrubtly at low throttle acceleration, and has a real dip when it downshifts if you put you foot in it. If you put it in sport mode and go ahead and put it in 5th, it shifts much more smoothly and more like you expect it to. I may try to run most of my next tank in the manual-shift mode and see what it does with my mpg. It's not deal-breaker bad, I still really like the car, but I expected better shifting, and am a little relieved that I'm not the only 2.4L/5A pilot that notices the issue.Maybe one day they will have a better shift map that can be flashed (and take care of the rough downshift many complain about that I don't seem to have)

i've noticed the slight lag when i first got the car, but coming from a v6 i thought it was normal for a 4cyl lol but i think i'm wrong on that =P anyways after a while i don't really notice it anymore. i've also changed the stock air filter with the k&n one and right after i swapped it i've noticed that lag was gone and even today driving i don't notice any lag. i have a 5sp auto btw.

Major: I get, and I believe we all get, the same thing with the 4 speed automatic as well. There is a serious lag in my car when the A/C is on and I need the tranny to downshift from 3rd to 2nd. It's not a pretty site. The car struggles. I also get the lurch (sometimes) when the car comes to a stop and shifts down to 1st. There is something definitely wrong with both the 4 and 5 speed autos. Toyota has some homework to do.

Shift it yourself, whichever auto tranny you have. As for the lurching first gear, shift into neutral as you're stopping. But if you were really after performance, you would have bought the stick!
