Scored my CARS 2009 Vibe last night...

Add me to the Cash for Clunkers club... GM practically gave me a new '09 vibe yesterday in trade for my 1993 Cherokee.There were only a couple Vibes within 50 miles of me.. a stripped down 1.8 and a fancied up Jet Black 2.4 with all electrics and 17" wheels.I opted for the full dressed 2.4 and could not be happier. List was $20k and change, with a clearance price of just over $19k. Tack on a $4k summer clearance rebate, $3.5K for my 1993 Cherokee (bought if for $4k 90,000 miles ago), and $1300 from my GMcard and I drove her off the lot for about $11.5kI was the first one at that dealership to use the CARS program, so they are still figuring it all out. They won't release the paperwork until the application gets officially in the system on Monday... so i'm actually driving around on a dealer loaner permit of some sort.. LOL They also asked me to sign a paper that stated that if the gov't didn't pay up, I would pay the difference or bring them the car back and they'd give me my cherokee back... Only got about 60 miles on her so far... but I think I'm really going to like it.

And that '85 Vette is no doubt worth more than the max $4,500 the govt would give you to crush it. Another year and it is "Historical" by Ohio standards.

Your trade-in must be made inoperable by destroying the engine or it must be crushed before the paperwork is submitted to the government. I doubt that there is much chance of any arbitrary non-approval. The qualification requirements are straight forward. Operable car, owned/licensed/insured for not less than 12 months, meeting the mpg specs on the Govt website, etc.

I imagine a number of deals will be invalidated. There is a lot of confusion about the requirements and you have to add in the human factor. Mistakes get made, documents get lost, rules are misunderstood.Dealers are frightened about this whole thing, they are the ones that stand to lose $3,500 to $4,500 on a deal if it is disallowed. Don't forget, they are also dealing with government employees on the other end. On the other hand, showrooms are full of potential customers for a change.I predict there will be some lawsuits before this program is over.I'm still waiting to pick up mine, hopefully Monday.

I'm not too worried about the whole deal though, I think everyone will try to make it work one way or another. I had the pefect trade.. it was my spare daily driver, owned outright, has been registered and insured since I bought it, was only worth about $500 if I sold it to someone off the street, etc, etc. They would really have to screw something up to trash that deal.On the other hand, I know there are a huge number of folks with clunkers that won't meet the registration/insurance rules, and have all kinds of lien paperwork nightmare issues, lost titles, etc, etc.I'm not truly comfortable with the whole no paperwork till early next week thing, but everything I was told was on paper and/or recorded on video tape. I'm happy enough with the opportunity to get such a good deal to risk the $100 I have out of pocket, and even something happening to my junker should the gov. screw up the deal. Truth is, I would have probably bought the car anyway, even without the extra $3500 trade... It was time for a new vehicle and with the summer clearance, the Vibe I bought was the most bang for the buck on a vehicle I actually like. On the other hand, I WAS looking at an '08 Vibe that was going to be about $12,200.00 OTD, but it had 40k miles on it already, so I couldn't see buying it when I could get a new '09 for the same price.

...some quick, back of the napkin, number crunchings show that more than 222,222 people traded in their old clunkers last week...but, that's still only about 4,444 people per state!...two MORE billion $'s should help even more (car companies...and, state TAXES!)
