Middle console help needed

Post by Mr Magoo »

I'm looking for someone to make a tracing of the little mat that goes in the the compartment in front of the cup holders on the 03-08 models. I can either send a S.A.S. envelope to you or you could post it here in a PDF or Word document so that others may print it out and use it also. I would like to make a custom insert for this space since I don't have the mat. I'm thinking of using 1/16" thick polished aluminum diamond plate which I have quite a bit of. Thanks.

you couldn't set a piece of paper or plastic in there and trace it out?

Here you go, from an '03It's a PDF. When you print it out, be sure to select "None" for print scaling, or it won't be the right size. The short sides are not exactly flat, but for reference, at the widest point (by the notches in the side) it is almost exactly the same width as the diameter of a CD.and what were you doing up so late (or early) this morning?

Perfect! Thank you. I had just got home from work and was heading to bed. I work 2nd shift and have been working 7 days a week, 12 hours a day.

Got it done!

Post by Mr Magoo »

Finally got around to making my console insert today. I printed out the pattern that Joatmon so graciously provided and cut it out for a test fit. It fit pretty loose, so I made gradual adjustments to it until I had a good fit. Can't have it too tight or it's hard to get out. Having the copy of the original saved a lot of time though. Setting a piece of paper down in that compartment and trying to trace it would take some time to get it perfect. We have a saying in my trade, work smart, not hard. I printed one of the patterns out on a 5"X8" note card so that it would be a little stiff to work with. After I got that really close I transfered that to a piece of 24 gauge galvanized steel. The steel pattern allowed me to "file fit" the pattern even closer. Here's a picture of the paper pattern and the steel pattern.

My next step was to transfer the pattern to the .063" aluminum treadplate and cut it out with a jig saw. Because the aluminum is so soft, file fitting is easier than with the steel, but still tedious.

After getting the fit I liked, I applied some thin adhesive backed felt pieces to the underside to keep it from rattling.

Well, now those cup holders sure look pretty plain. I think I'll have to dress them up next.

Looks good...!!I didn't realize at the time the part you where making... lol.. my bad, that would have sucked to trace on paper... I made a bunch of things for my old Astro, much like that.. I had dash trim and door trim, pedals, trimmed the outside door handles, the fuel door, the rear door handle/license plate box (deleted)Fun stuff to play around with..
