Change Tranny Fluid

Post by zdkaiser »

I am going to change my auto tranny fluid. Drain and refill will be the method. Where is the drain plug? And do I have to unscrew any panels, or just the drain bolt? Can I do this without a jack? All I have is the tirejack in the vibe to hoist the car up.

It's going to get messy if you can't jack the car up with the proper jack, and the spair tire jack IS NOT A JACK TO USE TO WORK ON THE CAR. It's ment for emergency use only. But yes there is a bolt on the bottom of the pan that you take out to drain the pan. It's on the silver pan on the driver side of the car.

All I have is the tirejack in the vibe to hoist the car up.If you can change the motor oil/filter w/o a jack you can certainly change the xmission oil w/o a jack. Personally I use a pair of car ramps. You don't have to remove any panels. Just the 14mm drain bolt that sits right in the middle of the xmission cover. Just get the engine to operating temperature, remove the drain plug/bolt (uh....make sure the engine is off ), let the old oil drain out, install/tighten the drain plug (not THAT tight), remove xmission dip stick, put a funnel in the dip stick tube, then add 3 quarts of Toyota Type T-IV ATF. Warm the car up. Check the fluid level (when the car is on the ground). Then add about another 1/2 quart of Type T-IV ATF. Checking the fluid level so you don't overfill the xmission. Just make sure that the engine is hot when you check the xmission fluid level.

Hi,Do a search on this topic, a lot of different opinions as well as controversy on what is the PROPER way to change Auto Trans oil and if multiple changes or the shops exchange pump system, etc. Pulling the drain plug only removes a portion of the AT fluid. A LOT stays in above the valve body, in the torque convertor, in the cooling lines, etc.Read the posts, decide what is best for you.Dave
