The vibe is gone....

Post by Atomic »

I brought the Vibe back to the dealer today, the lease was up.It has been four years of absolutely no problems. Not a single thing ever screwed up, or broke or needed service other than the oil changes and one set of new tires.I have looked at a couple of other new vehicles:Hyundai Accent (too small, kind of junky)Kia RIO5 (really inexpensive, well optioned, underpowered)Corolla and Matrix (same as the Vibe, more money)Mazda 3 SPORT (love this car, too much money)I didn't bother with any of the Americans, I never liked Fords, I especially won't bother with GM, and Chrysler has nothing to offer that I like AND can afford. My wife got laid off about four months ago, I was laid off two months ago, and there is NOTHING in my field anywhere close to where I live, so we just have a piece of junk car that was given to us three months ago to share between my wife and I as we can't afford anything else right now.At least I will be getting quite healthy walking to a lot more places.

Some years ago I was able to negotiate a buyout of a leased 1996 Corolla for over $2,000 less than the lease buyout price because they knew that was still more than they were going to get taking it to auction.

Sorry to hear this! A new car is last on the list for you of course and at least you have one paid for car between the two of you. If you ever need help with it, no matter what brand, do not be afraid to ask!

They do try to wring some extra cash out of you at the end by claiming "damage" beyond normal wear and tear. Contracts often include an acquisition fee at the beginning and a lease end disposal fee that they sometimes charge even if you buy the car at the residual value. They also get a per mile fee if you exceed the mileage limit of your lease. It is less costly to build extra miles into the lease than to pay the over mileage penalty at the end.In the old days leases were often an advantage because of (1) an interests rate subsidized by the manufacturer, and/or (2) an overly optimistic lease end residual value.Just like with car loans people with good credit get a better lease deal than those with bad credit. I once leased a Toyota at a bargain price. The dealer told me that was essentially a teaser as only a few buyers had good enough credit to qualify.

Are all repairs taken care of and paid for by the leasing company. Leasing possibly makes sense if you lease for business since there are tax deductions - but I'm not sure about the advantages for personal use.

Leasing company has no responsibility for repairs. There are tax deductions for business use use of a leased vehicle and also tax deductions for business use of a purchased vehicle. I never understood why many think leasing is best when there is business use.
