Shark fin and HD radio

I've read that going the shark fin antenna you lose some signal strength/quality. For anyone that has HD radio and a shark fin, what kind of impact have you noticed? Is it a small decrease in strength or do you have to get much closer to the radio station for the HD stations to kick in?

I don't have a shark fin, but do have short stubby antenna. I noticed a difference in signal strength/quality.
