odd random noise from front of vehicle?

I have been hearing an odd sound for the past few months. It is very random and it may go a day or so between occurrences. Obviously, it is kind of hard to describe the exact noise, but it is low pitched, lasts about a second and a half, changes frequency during the occurrence, and almost sounds like something is rubbing. At first, I thought it might be a brake dragging, but after examining the pads, no odd wear was detected. I replaced the pads anyway, but the sound continues. I have not check the rear drums which could be a possibility I suppose, but it seems like the noise is coming from the front.Anyone ever experience something like this?

that does sound both odd and random. tough to know what to suggest without hearing the noise. are you sure it's not just something about the patch of road? Does it happen only when gong straight or making a turn? Is there a certain speed range for the sound? Did youcheck all of the wheel well liners and other thin plastic air shields under the car to see if any are loose or showing signs of being rubbed?
