new car in the family

Post by bodhi_tree777 »

My dad surprised us while we were in NC by giving us a car. Between my mom (who doesn't drive) and him, they had 6 cars and 2 motorcycles, so he needed to make some space. We happened to need another car, and voila..It's actually the most modded car I've ever had. 1997 Camry, V6 engine, 100k miles, lowered (KYB shocks/struts), tinted, custom gauges on the dash, 17" OZ racing wheels (waay curb rashed), 10 disc Kenwood changer in the trunk with Kicker speakers and a single 10", along with 2 Kenwood amps. I have no specs because I'm lazy and inside at the moment, but I did get a picture before we drove off with it. That's me and my dad poking around in the trunk.anyone ever own one of these? pretty reliable, I hear.

I spy a Supra. As for the Camry, yeah, take decent care of it and it will last you forever.. I have a friend who has one w/ the V6 and hasn't done anything but routine maintenance. He doesn't beat on it, but I think he's got 150-175k on his with no major problems. It's always exciting to get a different car, especially when they are nice.

yup, that's a (92-93?) Supra in the background that my dad's in love with. Also a Chrysler Town & Country on the right, and (not pictured, but around there) a Dodge pickup, a Ford Explorer and a 97 Jaguar with like 17k miles on it (my grandpa's, now my dad's. he wants to dump it, says its no fun to drive). Also a Hayabusa and some other bike in the garage. My dad never gets rid of anything and his dad was the same way

It's a great car. My father-in-law gave my wife and I a 2000 Camry about a week before he passed away. Too bad I can't mod both the Camry and the Vibe.

Not as cool as the purple VW.

I'm sure they're no Genvibe, of course..

My wife drives it and she won't let me do anything to it. Too bad about the VW. In the past 2 weeks we have sold our '72 VW Bus, '70 Chevy Blazer and the '69 Datsun 510.

Not certain, but the Camry might be from the time when Toyota had the engine sludge problems. Keep the oil clean.

Keep an eye on the oil condition. I can't be sure but there was a few years were the Toyota V6 engines liked to sludge up. Can't remember if it was the 3.0L or 3.3L.

Seafoam? For what its worth, my dad ran fully synthetic (Castrol maybe), proper weight oil in it for most of its life if that will help.

I'm not even sure what that means, but the name I guess is pretty self-explanatory. What causes it? How do you prevent it? Got a few days off coming up so I do believe I'm going to detail the crud out of this car (literally, my parents are slobs) and get some better pics up.

to help prevent sludge build up, change the oil at recommended times, add a catch can so that extra crap don't go back in to the engine, add a bottle of cleaner now and again to the gas.

The 510 wasn't in very good condition. No motor or drivetrain. Rusted out in many places. All we did to it was cut out the floor pans and weld in new ones. One of the many projects we didn't have time to do.
