rust frame rear wheels GT

Post by JerseyGT »

Just had my car on the lift @ my mechanic. Rear wheels back plates have rusty deteriorated spot welds. This caused the back plates to flex and scrape on the wheel. This happened on both passenger and driver side within the course of the last month. it caused the pins for the emergency break hookup to break, and loud scratching vibrating noise to occur. i have an 03 GT and there is more..... The mechanic ordered a new back plate to replace the old ones. The standard Vibe model backplates are around $40/ea. The GT back plates are $370/ea. I'm guessing due to the rear disc breaks. In addition to the rusty welds on the backplates, there is rust developing on the welds that attach the brake hubs and wheel assembly to the frame???? I am going to bring this to my regional dealership and discuss my options. Needless to say, I am not happy about this. Has anyone else experienced this? It is easy to check for. Look under your rear bumper @ the frame and wheel assemblies. there are large welds holding the wheels hubs to the frame. Scrape them lightly w/ a screwdriver. if the paint flakes off and you see rust underneath you've got the same issue i have.
