Speaker baffles

Some claim they improve the sound of the speaker.....myth or save your money?

Well, what do you mean by baffle?? Are you talking of a mounting baffle (spacer) or are you speaking of the baffles that cover the backside of the speaker...? A spacer or a more solid mount WILL help some, it gives the speaker more to work against..the foam covers NO, they will hinder performance more than helping it... The BEST thing you can do for a door speakers performance is adding sound deadening, and sealing the holes in the inner door frame... Door speakers are designed as "free air" so they need the space inside the door to work, but any time you can seperate the wave comming off the front of the speaker, from the wave comming off the back, you will increase performance... Sound deadening again, gives the speaker something to work against... I use the "coffee can" analogy... Take a big empty coffee can and talk into it, tap on the side, sounds terrible doesn't it... Now, fill half full of water and repeat, you've just sound deadened the coffee can.... any other questions? i'd be happy to answer..

Yep! I was talking of the baffles that cover the back of the speaker. I have been in the market for some replacement speakers and always known about the foam baffles but never heard of anyone using them. Saw them in crutchfeild. As far as speakers I have decided on the Polk DB651 model. I did a search on replacement speakers on this this site and read many good reviews about the DB series. i have the M & T system. As usual, this site is helpfull. Thx!

Polk Db's are nice... congratz... And the foam baffles CAN be used, you just want to cut them so they cover the top half'ish of the speaker to help keep it from getting wet.. any more and you'll run the risk of changing the sound... Cheers.. also, a little sound deadening would help them sound quite a bit better.. Something to consider..

hahaha I tried a set of the XTC baffles withe some JL 6.5 component woofers and 150 watts you could hear the baffle vibrating , sounded like the speaker was farting.Aron
