Yokohama YK520 tire

Anyone heard of these before? Just got off the phone with someone at Discount Tire, told them I was looking at the General Exclaim UHP and he also suggested the Yokohama YK520. Any opinions on this one? It looks a little better plus has twice the mileage rating (Generals-30,000 vs Yokohama's-60,000). The only down side is that the Yoko's are $26 more a tire. One good thing about them is that it has a BUNCH of positive reviews on the Discount Tire website.Here's what I'm looking at:Anyone?

i've heard of yokohama and have mentioned them in previous tire threads..they're all good tires..personally i havent heard of that model..but go with what the reviews say and your personal preferance

I just don't know if the Discount Tire guy was trying to push that tire on me or not. I can kinda see what he was saying about the mileage on the tire plus being a better tire overall. The only Yokohama tires I have driven on were semi truck tires, obviously no comparison. I just might go with the Yoko's. They look like a good tire plus with all of the great reviews, I doubt that I could go wrong with it.

What are you after?? Many of the reviews posted on the sites (DTD and TR) are from people that really don't have a clue what tires are all about... The rating are also skewed toward what THEY want to sell as well... Remember THEY control what goes on the site, not some outside source, so there can be anything up there THEY want, if it sells them more tires... Try E-pinions.com and see if you can find them on there... At least you wouldn't be reading anything biased. If you are after a summer performance tire, that's not it, if all you are after is an A/S tire, well, it's hard to say... I am a firm believer in Summer/Winter tires... A/S tires are a compromise between good summer traction and "decent" winter traction, but, do neither very well... IMHO... This is why i do the summer tire/wheel with winter take off tire and wheels...

I have listened to many tire guys tell me that "This tire is the one you want." Unfortunately, that has ended me up with 2 sets of tires that I'm going to have to sell, hopefully. I think that the guy at Discount Tire has my interests at heart. Plus I did read a lot of the reviews on that Yoko tire and a LOT of them were good. Yes, there were some that said that they didn't like the tire at all. But the overwhelming opinion of this tire is positive. Yes, there are tires on that website that have really bad ratings, Continental to name one. So IF they control what goes on their website as far as reviews, then why are there so many negative reviews on many tires? You would think that they would only put the positive reviews on to sell more tires. I think that they want to show both sides of the picture. There are some tires that are satisfying for the customer and there are some that are not.No, I'm not taking this wrong. This is the last set of tires I'm going to buy for a very long time. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries to get what you like. I believe that I will like these tires. They are going on my summer rims as that I have the Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 for the winter. I have a set of four 225/45R-17 Yokohama YK520s on Scion TC wheels I put on my 2003 Vibe last August. I really like them. I have around 10,000 miles on them so far. They cost $512 at Discount tire.

I've had them for the past year or so on a sent of Konig Incidents. I've been happy with them though they don't have quite the traction of the YK420 that they replaced. Hopefully the tradeoff for longer tread life will pay off.

I don't have the money or garage space for a summer/winter rotation so I wanted to get the best possible AS tires that fit my budget and overall driving conditions. Before replacing the Goodyear Assurance Comfortred tires (rated 80K miles, but didn't make it to 43K miles) that were on the car when I bought it, I researched the owner reviews in Tire Rack, Discount Tire, and Epinions to name a few sites and rarely found negative feedback on the Yokohama YK520. I ended up buying a set of four P205/55R-16 91H tires from Discount Tire in Nov08 for approx. $506 out the door and have loved driving on them ever since. Sure, they could be better w/ snow driving, but given how light the Vibe is, I doubt that any winter tire is going to help it plow through the snow like our 4x4 Explorer. That said, the YK520 has excellent grip, rides smooth, has a pretty good rolling resistance rating, and drives through heavy rain like it was on rails. If these tires make it to even 55K miles, I'll be happy and a repeat Yokohama customer.

I have about 25,000 miles on these particular tires and they are wearing great! Just wish I went with a slightly larger wheel/tire combo but I figure I'll get at least 50,000 out of these, maybe more! I keep them properly rotated at around 6,000 each rotation. I have my winter set of tires (Dunlop Winter Sport M3) that have served me well through the past 2 winters. Haven't tried my Yoko's on snow/ice yet. Good luck with yours!

Thanks for the tip on the Dunlop winter tires. I expect to have this car for a few more years and might try using a dedicated winter tire if I can get a set of rims and tires for an acceptable price. I liked how the Dunlop Radial Rover A/T's on my wife's Explorer handled the snow and ice during this past winter, even without 4x4 engaged.

I have never had a problem with my winter Dunlops. Although I don't go 4 wheeling with the Vibe, they do pull me through the snow with relative ease. The only thing that I can see wrong with them is that they are a directional tire so rotation is simply front to back, back to front. BUT they are wearing rather well. Got them from tirerack on special. Good luck!

my TWO CENTS: Never buy a Yokohama tire! I've had three different sets go bad with internal belts breaking and big lumps forming in the tire. After a call to Yokohama for some warranty support (they had less than 10k miles and 1 year), they stated I needed to PROVE I did not cause it! When I asked how I was suppose to PROVE a negative - it should be their job to PROVE the POSITIVE. I only asked for ONE tire, about $50, in warranty but they steadfastly refused. I swore from that point on, I would tell every one I knew about this issue and lack of service. Since then, I assume they have lost $5-10k in sales over a $50 issue.I have had Michelin, Kumho, Sumitomo, Dunlop and a few off brands and have never had any other instances of belts breaking inside the tire.

i had the yokohama yk-420 on my car for about a year the handling was good along with the traction, but the wear rate sucked. when i bought the tire they told me it should last about 60,000 miles, instead it only lasted about 35,000 miles. since then i have switched to bridgestone re92 tires. there wear rate was awesome but the squealed a lot. so now i have switched to summer and winter tires.

How often were you rotating the tires and were your wheels aligned? I'm not the tire warranty gestapo, but I'm curious to know what to expect from my tires.

every 3,000 miles i rotated my tires. and yes my i had my tires aligned.

I should have baseline measured the tread depth back in November when I bought them. That said, I'll measure it this weekend and then keep tabs semi-annually to see how they're holding up.

I had YK420's on my Alero. I was pleased enough with them that I kept getting new ones when the old ones wore out but. I don't know how on Earth your rep thought they were 60,000 mile tires. They were rated for 20,000 - 30,000, iirc. I bought the YK520s about 2.5 years ago and just went to get new tires today. I never rotated my tires (not a once) and when I went to get my front tires replaced (rears are still in great shape after more than 2 years) the total was around 65,000 miles out of them.While they don't have quite the grip that the 420s had, these definitely wear a lot better and I happily recommend them.

im running Yokohama tires right now, love them! depends what you want though. those look to me like all weather tires if that's what you want
