bought one for my X. If you don't have an iphone its a good fun toy. But I would just assume get a Nintendo DS.Or if you have Verizon, get a BB Storm like me. That thing rules all. My buddies iphone is nice, but I am not a fan since you lightly touch by accident and you can screw things up.
if it is the ipod touch... well I have both iphones, 2g and 3g. My coworker has a ipod touch which is thin as heck. Its awesome with wifi so you can surf the net and get apps, it can be jailbroken to run homebrew apps, get themes... Its worth it in my opinion...
I don't quite get it personally. Why spend so much for an iPod that does everything an iPhone can do except make phone calls ?!?!?! Why have the iPod (iTouch) and also carry around some other phone? Face it, Soon our phone will also be our laptop computer, a lot of the smart phones on the market today, including the iPhone are coming darn close to filling that niche right now!Get the iPhone, it's been nothing but a joy to own and use. Mine replaced another brands microsoft based smart phone and I have no regrets whatsoever! I hated that other phone, everything was just so difficult while the iPhone is so intuitive. (no I'm not an rabid apple guy either, this was my second apple product replacing an older iPod, My computers are all IBM clones running microsoft) Even all the hype about AT&T is a bunch of BS, I've had nothing but great service from them. I do think a lot depends upon the area you live in. Personally I live in a Verizon dead zone anyway.Dave
because with the iphone you are tethered to a expensive contract unless you pay 400+ dollars for a jailbroken one on ebay. A ipod touch is 1/2 as thin as a iphone, but does NOT have a camera, phone or full GPS. Honestly the touch is the same as any other ipod or mp3 player but with wifi and isnt that much more... so saying that really is saying why would any person with any mp3 player also carry a phone....
With Skype now available on the Apple iPhone, it's only a matter of time before someone hacks the iTouch and gets Skype installed on it. That would make it a slimmer, cheaper iPhone w/o the contract.

Any phone will come with a 2 year contract, its no big deal. Yes, there is an extra connection fee with the contract for the iPhone but it has been so worth every penny we put out for it.You also need WiFi hot spots whereas that extra fee gives me internet virtually anywhere at all.Go ahead, carry two electronic devices, worry about losing two devices, worry about both devices being charged. For me.... no thanks, I'll just take my incredibly wonderful iPhone all by itself.Bottom line, do what is best for your lifestyle.I don't own a touch but my niece has one, it is a wonderful iPod! In her case daddy provides a cell phone on Daddy's plan. She lives with Mommy so jumping to an iPhone isn't in the cards at this point in her life. She would prefer the phone given her druthers. She is where I get most of my "it's a pain in the rear to carry two devices" information.dave
May I add that I went through 2 Black Berry Storms in 30 days, the battery life was terrible and I had to hard reset it 2-3 times, not to mention the screen had "white snow" on it also. So I went with a BB Curve and fits my needs. I have an iPod Nano that I use for my music. iPhone is not an option as AT&T service where I live and travel is hit and miss. The iPod touch would be for medical applications only.

Ah the medical apps, diabetes? I am still waiting for the citrix client to come so I can log into work with that. In the mean time I use rdp. do you have a apple store near you? or a friend with a touch? They are thin as heck! if it was to be carried all the time you wouldnt even know it was on you.djkeev - yes.. so with a iphone you would spend hundreds more dollars for use a year. ipod is a 1 time expense. so no its not worthless, specially since what it will be used for.

I have a touch - got it for Christmas 2007. I haven't used it since Christmas 2008 when I got my BB Storm. The Storm kills that thing... I don't like the Apple touchscreen.

And I had nothing but problems with my Storm (2 of them to be precise). Go figure. Applications could not be accessed (they were not hidden) and 2-3 hard restarts in a 2 week period is too much for me.

RIM has been putting out new Operating Systems for it like crazy, fixing a lot of the bugs. You probably had an early O/S.

Wow, this is the first place I've heard people happy with the BB Storm. (Not that I've looked many places)I like my iPod Touch. Since a lot of the apps out there take advantage of the internet and/or GPS, it is kind of a bummer when WiFi is not available. At this point I would wait a bit. The 3.0 OS will be released in June and Apple is due (based on past releases) to release a new version of the iPhone and iPod Touch sometime this summer or fall.

My storm has OS .76 on it and that was Christmas and they're up to .133 or something now. Your Storm would have been up to date for what it was sold for, but it doesn't mean the OS was any good at the time.

RIM has an office here and I'd love to get a job testing there (I'm a software tester).

Your Storm would have been up to date for what it was sold for, but it doesn't mean the OS was any good at the time.I literally purchased the Storm on Feb 26th 2009 and I checked online for software updates and even took it into my cellular carrier to have them check to see if it also had all the updates. I did this several times within a 30 day period with 2 phones. There were times I was unable to access the function to change the wall paper as when I went to go press options, nothing occurred. The little arrows on the screen when scrolling would become all distorted or not show up at times. "Snow" like when a tv loses its reception when switching from the phone to end calls at times. There were other issues as well. Considering I gave 2 phones a try and had the same issue, safe bet was not to be stuck with it. Losing 14-18 hours of my time on a new product between driving, standing in line, and having the phone looked at was enough also. No one should have to spend that much time to have a product that is "new" to work properly, especially in the end when it didn't.

As long as you have a 2nd gen iPod touch (the current model), and the Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic, you can use Skype just fine (it's on Skype's FAQ).It still wouldn't replace an iPhone completely, as you need to be within a wifi network to use it, and SkypeOut isn't free, but it's certainly a nice alternative.
