Where to get a key and remote?

Post by knaffie »

Does the key have a security chip in it, or can I just go to the local hardware store and have them cut me one? Is there a good place to get another remote, or just grab one off Ebay? What's the deal with the FCC id# thing listed in the auctions? I've never had to deal with that before.

(My Mom owns a Vibe and Dad own a PT Cruiser, they both like to have spare keys). Your easiest bet is probably to just get a spare key + remote from your local Pontiac Dealership, $30 really isn't that much considering you get the key + remote.

What year? Anything 2003-2008 does not have a chip in the key. You can get the key cut at any place that cuts keys, it's a Toyota blank. I've had them cut at mal*wart before...I don't know if you have an 09.For the remote, look at the back of the existing one if you still have one and it should have the FCC ID. Make sure if you buy a remote online that it matches the one you already have. Programming instructions are on the board somewhere, just do a couple searches.

I just got one for my 05 at the local hardware store. Key fob on E-bay. total cost was 2.50 for key and 4.99 for fob. The 09s have a chip though.

I have an 09 Vibe. I just took my FOB apart and didn't find any security chip. My vibe starts just fine from a copy I had made.

Not all 09's have a chip. Mine doesnt either. For an 09 you have to look at the metal part of the FOB key near the FOB. If there is a little indentation on one side, supposedly you have a chipped key. Stupid HD and Lowes wont copy keys if they are chipped. They get all huffy and tell you how your car will blow up without the chipped key. My key does not have the indentation, but my friends camry does and wont start without a chip key.
