Working on a Mini?

A co-worker just took their Mini Cooper in for service. The problem was the cooling/radiator fan motor would not operate on low speed, only high, So it was causing problems. The part was not too expensive, for a Mini (about $200), but they had to actually remove the engine to get to the cooling fan and then re-install the engine. Total cost: $200 + 7 hours of BMW labor at $150 /hour = $1,250 to replace a cooling fan. I think they cut him a deal on the part, though.

sheesh! I really the mini but the notion of parts and servicing on one frightens me. My sis has a Mini has her daily driver (100 miles/day commute I think) and while she's got a zillion miles on it I don't think she's really had much go wrong with it... besides hitting a deer. Gotta drive to Cincinnati or Indianapolis (2 hr drive) just to get service at a few hundred bucks a visit.

have you seen the engine bay of a mini??! Im not sure you can change plugs or do a oil change with out taking the engine out but like the Stypes with the SC you cant even see the SC its tucked in there soooooo tight.

I can relate. Had to take off the rear wheels and muffler to change my spark plugs.

The dealer had a 2003 Yellow Mini for sale with 16,000 miles on it when I purchased my Vibe. They were asking $13,000 I believe. I was tempted...

7 hours to R&R a motor? thats pretty cheap actually. I haven't seen a motor R&R for less then 10 hours.

Why do you need a 2 speed fan?????? The Vibe's fan is a 1 speed and works fine. IIRC, the ScanGauge seldom indicated higher than 188F.

IIRC, the ScanGauge seldom indicated higher than 188F.Its a mini S type, and if its one of the 1st gen its supercharged, so it gets HOT. so its variable for when its too hot in that engine bay.. again have you seen a mini s engine bay? theres no room for air even!
