Lost my job and more

Post by ajflan »

I love how everything crappy happens at the same time. I got fired from the place I've been working at for the last three years. The reason they gave me was because I was over six minutes late three times over the last three months. Mind you, the last three months have been the worst I've seen in a long time as far as road conditions go, but they don't take that into account, do they? Of course not. And lucky me all of this happens when I am flat out broke. I have drained my savings down to almost nothing because of the lack of hours at work this winter. Also, my exhaust has sprung about five leaks and sounds like absolute garbage. I need new brakes badly as well. Oh yeah, and I am also about 700 dollars in debt to my father right now too. What a great time to be out of a job, right? And yes I know that there are a lot of people suffering because of the economy and all that, but it does not make my situation any better. So before I get people telling me that it could be worse, just let me say that I know that. I just don't need to hear it.And now I'm done venting.

Unfortunately, that is what companies are doing these days. They will micro-manage their employees and find any excuse to get rid of them.(removed)'s Sporting Goods on 23 Mile/Gratiot is looking for for help. You might want to try there. I would not mention you were fired though from Home Depot if you fill out applications anywhere. If they ask why you left your previous employer, just come up with something, , but do not have them contact anyone there.

Man, what a dumb reason to fire you...did they at least give you warnings the other times, or?

Sounds like they were needing to make cutbacks anyways. The first to go are always those that there are strikes against, no matter how minor they may be. The way they see it, you should have left earlier to get there on time. Of course, you and I an everyone else who is an employee feels they should take mother nature into account. But, no, they never have and never will. Did they give you written or verbal warnings at all after each time you were late? Take this as an opportunity to find out what you really are wanting to do ans start working towards that goal. I hope you are able to find something soon to at least get your brakes fixed so your Vibe stays safe to drive. The exhaust and payments to your dad can wait. Talk with your dada as well and let him know, that once you have another job you need to get your brakes fixed first, then you can start paying him back. Start saving for your exhaust at teh same time. Once your dad is paid off, then get your exhaust replaced.I have been in your position. It sucks. But try to keep you head up. Look on your local craigslist for jobs. That is how I found my current job. Best of luck to you, man!

Same thing happened to me way back in my high school days. I was working at a move theater, and honestly I was usually the only 1 "working", as everyone else would go in the back and hide when things got ****ty. For further reference the standing rule was once your relief came you could leave, minutes weren't an issue as long as the person replacing you was there. We had a new manager come in from a bigger theater, young guy, thought he was the **** and everyone should bow before him. We had issues from the start as I am not 1 to give respect where it isn't due, but at the same time, I did not disrespect him either, I just didn't kiss his *** like everyone else did. I had been working there for a while with no problems at all. 1 night they put me by myself at a back stand further into the theater (unusual as you usually have more than 1 person), and I kept things running smoothly with no problems, everything kept stocked and clean, etc... This manager kept coming out of the blue to find me there behind the counter leaning on am arm. He would tell me to do all this crap that didn't need to be done just to keep me busy and to stop leaning on the counter. Mind you I was all by myself with no customers! Then at the end of the night I had to shut down the whole stand by myself, put everything away, clean out the popper, etc.. which is usually a multiple person job. Apparently it took me longer than it should have, and when I was done I was called up to the office. There I was told that I had left like 10min early on Sunday, and it took me way too long to close the stand. I was told that I was "terminated!" lol I was like, (removed) does that mean?!? He said my services were no longer needed there, and that I was fired. That is the only job I have ever been fired from, and it was B/S. I couldn't believe how people who regularly did nothing and everything to keep from doing anything were not fired and I was! Anyways, that's my story on the subject, you're not alone, might be a blessing in disguise!

What really gets me going as well is the fact that I had really been working extra hard lately, because I knew that they were looking for reasons to get rid of people. Oh well, lets see where life takes me next. Maybe I will win the lotto!! lol

It's not so much reasons as excuses. They didn't much care who they got rid of as long as they freed up some wage expenses. If they want to downsize, the general rule is with 3 write-ups/reasons they can fire an employee without paying a severance. I've seen companies have nothing on an employee and overnight have a file of things they 'remembered' but failed to document. It's a shady practice. Sorry you came out on the recieving end of it. Good luck in the job search and hope the car holds together!

sorry to hear it man, but it is true: corporations, in lean times, will look for any and every excuse to fire someone. However, they should have a process of verbal and written warnings of some kind before the hammer drops. Probably not worth arguing that point, though, since you're already out the door. You never know man. I've had bad times in my life turn out to be catalysts for some of the best things that have ever happened to me (last time I got fired led directly to me meeting my wife, believe it or not). Chin up, stay positive and you'll be okay. will your state allow you to collect unemployment if you were fired?

it's also a reason for them to deny you unemployment. The more documentation they have about you not performing your job or lateness, you can lose your chance at unemployment

Being late 3 times in 3 months may not be enough to bar an unempolyment claim. Might depend on rest of work record.2. The employer may not even contest it.

I believe part time employees are not allowed to collect unemployment. Of course, I am assuming that Ajflan works part time.

The fronts are bad. And the exhaust leaks are coming from a few different spots along the midpipe. A couple leaks are where a straight pipe was welded in place of the resonator. Another as at the joint of the midpipe and the axle back. The final leak is on the muffler its self. I think what I will do is get a magnaflow cat back and just throw that on. Besides, I kind of want to quiet it down a bit anyway, as to not attract unwanted attention.

Yeah I remember how hard it was when I got fired haha. Good luck trying to get unemployment. My opiate addiction prevented me from getting unemployment, the pharmacy contested my request but you might be able to get it so I would start going through the LOOOOOONG grueling, almost impossibly hard process of getting it this week.I still owe you money so top priority for me is to get it to you ASAP so at least you will have gas money for a bit I'm also trying to come up with an illegal way to make money since you cannot make a living legitimately at our ages these days so I'll keep you posted. Come spring we can detail cars for some bank. I may need a business partner (removed)...

Home Depot to cut 7,000 jobs, exit Expo businessBy John IttnerLast update: 8:57 a.m. EST Jan. 26, 2009NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Home Depot said Monday that it will exit its Expo business and streamline its support functions, resulting in 7,000 job cuts. That is about 2% of the company's workforce. The company sees a total pre-tax charge due to these actions of approximately $532 million, of which approximately $390 million will be recognized in the fourth quarter and the remaining $142 million will be recognized in 2009 and beyond. In addition, Home Depot affirmed its 2008 forecast of a decline of 8% in sales and a 24% drop in earnings per share from continuing operations before today's announcement. End of Story

ajflan, sorry to hear about your predicament. Hang in there, & file a claim for unemployment, anyway. There’s a complicated formula the State uses to determine whether you’re eligible, even if you didn’t work a full 40 hr week. It never hurts to try. And once you file with them, you can access their Michigan Works! programs. The people who work in these programs are experts at assisting unemployed workers to find job matching their skills & abilities. Having said that, don’t hold your breath waiting for unemployment benefits. Unless you were laid off or your position was eliminated (i.e., you lost your job through no fault of your own in any way), the Employment Insurance Agency has to investigate the circumstances surrounding your dismissal. And they are taking a very L-O-N-G time to do that right now. My sister lost her job right before Christmas in a purge similar to yours, & they still haven’t made a determination for her, yet. Thankfully, she’s found other part-time work (substitute teaching) to pay some of the bills while looking for full-time work. Also, don’t be too proud to ask for assistance from the State (i.e., the Bridge Card). That’s what those benefits are for: a temporary aid while you’re trying to get back on your feet. You paid taxes to fund that program, you might as well get some of it back. Finally, keep us posted on what, if anything, happens with the unemployment claim. I have lots of experience in helping folks in that area & may be able to offer advice. Best of good luck!

Awe man, that's "(Expelitive)" Let me know if you, in fact, need a place to do the brake work(when and if it comes about), i'm sure you can find something closer to home, but, like many, it's the best I can offer right now... I'm more than willing to pull the Subie out, to get someones car in... In fact, I did that this weekend with the GF's brothers car and a friends snowmobile

Either way this country is screwed up. Seems like just leaving Michigan wont be enough anymore. I'm debating if I want to even live in this country altogether in the future once I get enough money to make a decision. Germany or Australia is looking pretty inviting as of late. AJ and my friend Frederick came here to the US for the first time from Berlin in the fall and we got to talk to him about how things are REALLY run in Germany. He was FASCINATED with how crappy our economy is and the insane amount of money we pay for certain things like insurance and all that. He is an auditor over there and from how he was talking Germany sounds like an OK place to live.

In fact, today, Iceland's government collapsed amid economic crisis.

With turmoil comes opportunity, and this country is still one of the best for opportunities, starting businesses, etc. I was laid off from my first job out of college (at an insurance company) in January 1983. I ended up taking a job with a small local company a couple months later, working for someone who would later become my business partner. In 1984 the owner of the company sold it, and my (now former) boss and I left and started our own company. 25 years later we're still here. Being laid off turned out to be a fantastic career move, though it sure felt bad at that time.2009 will likely be a very tough year, but it won't be this way forever. Good luck to all of you. Keep your chin up, look for opportunities and try to save a little money along the way so you can take advantage of opportunities when they arise.
