2003 5 speed manual question

Post by kartrac3r »

Hello guys and gals. I have a question for you all. I am looking at a 2003 Vibe near me. The owner says that everything seems fine except the transmission has issues. The owner isn't very tech savvyu for the info they give me is very vauge and limited. The owner says the transmission has problems and when looked at by a mechanic, its was recommended to replace the transmission. My question(s) to all of you:1) What does a new transmission usually cost?2) Would it be better just to replace all of the innards?3) Could this possibly be a DIY project? (This is my first attempt at a FWD car. I'm a RWD guy so I don't really know what it would take to fix a transaxle)

i have a 2003 5 speed. had the tranny replaced at 63000 mile with a used tranny. the used tranny cost 900 and 500 dollars to install it. a brand new tranny would have cost me 1500 dollars and 500 dollars to install it that is roughly 2000 dollars

Welcome to the world of fabled Toyota reliability. My 03 had the tranny fail also.I don't know if it's better to fix or replace. I was pressed for time, so I replaced it with one from a wrecked 05 Corolla If you get one from a junkyard, don't get another 03, the later years don't seem to be failing like the 03's do.Best bet on pricing is to call a couple of local places and get estimates. I can't say if you can do it yourself, it's a non-trivial process, and everybody has different skills. And tools. Probably worth replacing the clutch when you're in there. Get a good one, it;'s a hassle to change, but if you're going to pull the tranny anyway, then it's not much more work.
