Stolen keys...change the locks? :(

While now out of town (4 hours by car from home) with our family my wife's purse was stolen while we were group dinner at a restaurant. *Everything* was in there i.e. phone, cc, IDs, home, car keys etc. Being out of town has made it more difficult to do all the cancellations. She has made an official police report with the local police. We are still out of town and cant easily get back home until sometime tomorrow.I guess what I am a bit concerned about is the loss of car and home keys with many references to our home addy (4 hours away by car). (The second car (05 Vibe 5 speed) is in the driveway unattended. We have contacted a next door neighbour just to keep a more watchful eye till we return tomorrow)Do you think I should change the locks on the Vibe? And now that I think about it the keyless entry would need to be reprogrammed as well .And the I guess this could all be done at the stealership.What do you think?

If you park in the garage, I say house: yes, car: no. If you park in the driveway, yes to both. The car is a moving target. If thieves are willing to travel 4 hrs and they enter your house, they will get the car anyway if it is in the garage. Keeping them out of the house keeps them out of the car so no need to change the locks on the car. If the car is in the driveway and you don't change the locks, it's easy to just jump in and drive away. The 5 speed is theft deterrent enough.

Absolutely. If there's id/reference to where you live. 4 hours isn't a long drive for a car that you've got the keys for. It's not a huge cost for the piece of mind. Ignition column and keyless entry.I'd also suggest signing up for a service such as transunion to get a credit check and ID theft alerts. It might not be all that tongue-in-cheek - I've heard several cases of cars that were broken into but then left behind in favor of another nearby car that had an automatic.And our daughter kind of liked the fact that in high school and college no one ever wanted to borrow her car since they didn't know how to drive it.

I hope your social security numbers were not on that ID/check books, etc. I'd worry more about identity theft than the car. Regardless, you still need to call those credit card companies ASAP. These crooks are out there, waiting for opportunity. It escalates during the holidays.It recently happened to my mom (again) too. She saw a car in the parking lot at work, but thought they were dropping someone off. She put her lunch cooler and tote bag down (purse was still in the car) she turned around and her things were gone. My boss' sister' friend's mom was not so lucky...she actually got knocked down as some punks grabbed her purse strap. Stay safe everyone

As best we can tell by phone it seems that all major ID documents i.e. driver's license, car ownership and car insurance papers are recovered.But the purse with keys in it were not found. Given that the documents are now separated from the car keys I will not re key the car (I understand this is expensive) but as a precaution will re key the two house doors.

oh my gosh, glad you got id's back all of them hopefully. Identity theft is a painful thing to have to deal with.

i may be sounding a bit paranoid. but they could have copied your info. with you getting the items back you may be less on guard. if it was me id still change everything.mabey insurance might cover rekeying?

In contrast the home owners policy (with the same company) will pay for rekeying the home with *no* deductible up to $1000. Crazy. Of course I made it quite clear that if *I* didnt re key the car on my own and the car was stolen at any point in the future than I wouildnt be held responsible. Yes that was true he said.Our home does have a monitored security system but I will have the entry doors re keyed this week.
