buying snows..

Post by mistertwo »

hey i'm back from the dead.. sooo I did a quick search and couldn't find an answer so maybe someone can help me out.. I found a great deal on 4 blizzaks with tons of meat on em, only problem is they are 225-60-16.. Can I rock those on the stock 16" rims or will I run into problems?Any insight is appreciated..thanks

What's the normal size of the 16" stocks?- - - edit - - - Just looked it up on tirerack. That seems like it might be too big a difference. Maybe someone with 16's can chime in with a little more knowledge than I.

They're too big. 6.58% in fact, 3% being the suggested limit. I had 205/60/16 one winter and there was not much room to spare. Any snow build up at all and the tires rubbed when turning and were very annoying.

I have 205/60/16 all seasons on mine. I haven't had problems with that, but it is also a very minimal change. It does seem those might be a little too big.

I had 215/60/16's on my vibe last winter and did not have any problems, but a lot of snow build-up in the wheel well because there was not much room for it to go.

I contacted two local tire retailers and both recommended 205/55/16's.http://www.goodyeartires.com/ Seems to back that up.Cheers.

215-55-16 is the stock size for a 16" Vibe/Trix wheel.Typically people go up a size and down in width with a snow tire. so it would be like a 205-60-16. The smaller width allows more cutting through the snow and the high profile allows for better traction and control.

I looked for taller snow tires but chickened out and bought 215/55 16 Blizzaks. They do measure a tad taller... but the tread is the same width as the 205/55 16 RS-As. If you look around, (a while back) MountainMax had a post about a set of 225/60 16s on the Vibe steelies that he used without fitment problems. You could try to contact him for specific info on them to be sure. You'll have to watch your speedometer if you do this and add the increased diameter percentage so you don't get speeding tickets. My summers (235/50 17) are about 4% bigger than the OEM 205/55 16s and they fit very well with a +38 offset wheel. The steelies are +39 offset. There's a lot of room in a Vibe wheel well.

This is my second winter with Dunlop Winter Sports M3 at 215/55/16 with no problems in clearance. The 60 series might be a little too tall unless you go down to a 15" wheel then you'd be ok.

I ran 225-60 R16 on my vibe the last two winters without problem. I chose them bc they give you a little more height and ground clearance when the snow gets deeper. Since they are a little higher there is room to move the snow out below the wheel wells. I keep up with trucks its great. I do have a set of 225-60 R16's for sale as I gave the vibe to my Mom

Its funny I remember looking at them saying this isnt gonna work and then it worked out better than the stock size. The best part is the ground clearance you gain that way there is no worries about getting snow packed under your car when its deep. GL.
