http://www.forbes.com/2008/10/...msnbcwhat do you guys think? among them are the audi a3, saturn skye and vw rabbit... i like those cars! the rest maybe, but for the most part, the article doesn't make sense to me!

Americans as a whole might not like those cars, but I personally like a lot of them. The Saturn Sky is a sporty compact? In the same category as the Scion Tc? uhhh, ok. It's safe to say that Forbes is pretty low on my list of respected sources of automotive information.
I read that article earlier in the afternoon and ended up scratching my head. So, they have two hatchback models listed and their answer is the exact same thing for both cars, so-and-so says Europeans like hatches but we don't, and they even worded it the same. For the most part, they failed to prove specifics on why people allegedly hate these things. These 10-whatever-cars lists you find on the internets are usually chock full o' BS anyway.

I agree with all except the A3. If I could afford one, I'd trade in the Vibe.

So the mazda is on the list but the sister escape is one of the better selling SUV's? I'm confused. The wagon comment makes no sense either. I see the subaru wagon all over, as well as calibers, vibes, and audis. Hate the rabbit, have never seen the Gallant until now, Jags are horrid now that Ford bought them. All in all a wierd list.
Some i agree with, some not so much.To start. Kia Rio. AGREED. I had one as a rental. What a pile. Don't get me wrong, thing did pretty nicely on fuel economy (though frankly, I expected MORE out of it for the gutless little thing it was), but it really is a quintessential econobox. I remember I had to take it BACK to the rental place and exchange it for another car because when i floored the pedal to try and merge onto the interstate, something snapped and it made HORRID noises and i was afraid to drive it after that. LOL!Rabbit - while i agree it is not selling like religion, i disagree with the base-less explanation of americans not liking hatches and wagons. If you look at what people are driving, there are PLENTY of them on the roads: all the time i see the mazda 3 (5-door), kia rio5, vibe, matrix, jetta wagons, etc. They are everywhere. People still want them. But the rabbit is a bit awkward imho. I've never seen one in person, but in pictures, it looks like the bunny lacks cargo space when all seats are up, which can explain why it's not ideal unless you never have any cargo when you have to shuttle people around.tribute - AGREED! - But not for the same reasoning. I honestly think the tribute doesn't sell because even the most uninformed of consumers probably looks at is and sees the escape/mariner. Since day 1 there has been absolutely NO effort to make the mazda LOOK like a mazda and NOT LOOK like a ford, and instead, they have continued year after year to truly *******ize it by making it the most pitiful of rebadges. I think if mazda built their own mini ute and styled it similar to the new 6, they'd be whistling a very different tune...saab 9-7x - AGREED - i've always seen anything coming from saab as catering to a niche market - the people who like strange things like odd looking vents and center console ignitions. lol.sky - DISAGREE - i think the sky/solstice haven't sold as well as one would hope because one of the biggest complaints since day 1 has ALWAYS been the complete absence of cargo space. Yes, most owners of a solstice/sky probably use it as a fun car and not a daily driver, but the trunk is the main reason the G6 got my money instead of the solstice. If there was a reasonable amount of cargo room in that two seater, then it COULD sell because people who can't afford fun cars could still manage to get one and accomplish day to day tasks. But when you only can fit one bag of cat food in the trunk and it's full, (removed) does GM expect???? as for the complaints on the top, i can't say either way having never tried to operate one.a3 - see comments on the rabbitmagnum - see comments on the rabbit BUT, i think one issue specific to the magnum has always been how insanely big it is. how do you park that thing???? galant - AGREED - don't know much about the competency or performance of the galant, but pitiful styling has ALWAYS been my main issue with that car. The new lancer looks fantastic. i would actually consider buying a new lancer if i was in the market for a car right now, because i love the look so much. But the new galant - still the runt of the group.XJ - AGREED - i was shocked that people continued to buy jags for as long as they did with their rapidly declining quality and reputation over the past few years, and i honestly don't expect to see the brand around for much longer. Now that it's in the hands of an indian company, i think americans in particular are going to be very wary of it from this point..RL - AGREED - acura has always suffered from the blands, but in all honesty, the "new" look they are slapping on their front ends - with the solid panel covering the upper half of the front ends - is absolutely atrocious, and in my head equates to the ugliness of the ridgeline front end on the new accord. if i had to choose, i'd rather buy a previous generation acura with the "normal" front end then the fugliness they're putting out nowand there are my thoughts. YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
"AutoPacific's Brinley says Americans are not fond of hatchbacks, which are widely popular in Europe." I don't know who this Brinley person is or where they're coming from, but Ford's dropping it's hatchback version of the Focus was a major reason for my going with the Vibe. Maybe I'm more of a function over form guy, but I like the versatility of the hatchback.

Why buy a Corolla with it's tiny little trunk, when you can get a Matrix? It's so much more practicle, and I think it looks better too. When buying a small car, hatch is the way to go.

I never understood why people want that notch taken out of there interior.I also don't understand why americans hate manual transmissions. A decent manual is so much more fun to drive than an automagic, usually better on gas too. I get frusterated that many of the cars I like are not available in manual. In Europe manual is the norm.
@ ragingfish...You are correct about the Mazda Tribute....but Mazda ALREADY sells another small 'ute...the CX-7.I cannot understand why the Tribute is still avail.when the Cx-7 is around....and is so very Mazda.
Great question. Most people don't necessarily hate it when some one personalizes a car, we hate it when they make the car look stupid, dangerous and annoying. Like these people who put 1" tires and a raised suspension to put 40" rims on the car. Monitors everywhere is just stupid and distracting to the driver. As for the loudest speakers, when it's 3 AM and I'm trying to sleep, those speakers kinda get on my nerves when the guy with them keeps on cruising around my block.http://autoselect.com/
Gotta agree on the Magnum. As for the rest....I would never buy a KIA for reasons too numerous to list here. The others must be based on sales figures....i guess??? The A3 is SWEET though!!
