gas mileage

Post by willysr »

I don't want to overdo this but my 09 with 2.4,5spd auto 80% highway with air on most of the time on 3rd tank flat terrain is getting 34 mpg is that average to other 2.4's?

34 seems pretty good to me. I'll normally get 32-34 with my 1.8L. If you can get the same mileage with a bigger motor, kudos.

What MPG standard are you using? US or UK? 1 US Gallon = 3.78L1 UK Gallon = 4.55LThis will greatly inflate your mpg numbers if you use the UK one. I have -no clue- why they show the UK mpg on Canadian window stickers. It's stupid, due to our close proximity to the US.

well considering that 34mpg is 5-6 mpg over the EPA rating, id say that is pretty darn good. For those of us who care about MPG it is always good to say how you were driving at the time. on the highway at 55 or 75... it makes a huge difference.

I also have a 09 with a 2.4 and the 5spd auto. On a 270 mile trip I took I was able to get almost 32 mpg with the AC cranked up. I have less then a 1000 miles on my 09 Vibe. In another thread somebody suggested that my mileage would improve once the motor broke in. I'm not sure by how much it might get better. I am keeping track off my mileage with every fill up, so we will see.

I had my '09 Vibe with the 2.4L and automatic for over a month now. The dealer gave me a full tank of gas. I was doing almost all stop and go local driving...sometimes with the AC on. I let the tank go down until the low fuel light came on. I started with only 2 miles and went 209 miles. I filled it with 10.7 gallons. 209/10.7 = 19.5 mpg. A few more things I should add, I did sat in the car with it idling in the driveway a few times to learn and play the radio.... A very complicated system. Second, I nevered check the tire pressure of the 17" eagle RS tires. They did always looked overinflated. After I filled the tank. I check the tire pressure and was shock to find them all at 40+psi. The tires were cold but it was about 85 degrees outside. This was the pressure as was given to me by the dealer. As you must know, the pressure should be 32psi cold. Third, I had to always force the car to go from a stop....there is lag. you either keep a light foot or I must push it. At 40 psi tire pressure, you would think the car would start to roll easy before giving it the gas. I now have the tires at 32psi for the next fill. I hope to go a whole month on a tank full. At the correct 32psi the car now starts to roll a little. FYI: my old car would alway start rolling after removing my foot off the brake. Did anyone check the tire pressure at the time of purchase?Anyway, I am not to happy about the mpg yet. maybe next time.

My '09 GT, 3 months old, 2.4 with 5 spd auto, air almost always on... In mixed suburban I've gotten anywhere from 21.5 to 25.5. One pure highway trip, air on, 65-70 mph, we got 28.5. When in a saving mood, I tend to watch the tach much more than the speedo, and try to get into 5th ASAP. Not always, though. Sometimes I like to play with the shifter and reminisce about my Corvette days.

My previous tire experience has been that using factory specs will lead to too much wear on the edges of the tire (indicating underinflation), so I usually ran 2 or 3psi over recommended. Now that gas is ridiculous expensive, I've been running 42psi and it *really* helps gliding. I've only had them at 42 for a couple thousand miles, but I intend to watch how they wear and I'll lower the pressure if necessary. Lots of people on the hypermiling sites swear that even at 50psi tires will wear more evenly and last longer than at spec. I'm not quite that brave... FWIW, for the first few thousand miles, I only managed 27.5mpg in my 1.8l auto (80% city). Now with higher pressure, pulse & glide when I can, watching a scangauge, I get 32mpg. If you're still just on your second tank, you'll see better mileage after breaking the engine in after a couple thousand miles. Good luck and keep us posted.

Now with tire pressure at 32psi instead of 40 psi, I am noticing the transmission down shifting and slowing the car down when removing the foot off the gas pedal. During the first month, I never felt it down shift much. I also tried the hand shift mode once, however, when I slowed down and brake for a stop, it would stay in 3rd or 4th gear. I would have to tap it down to first gear. I am not sure, but should it down shift back to first in the manual shift mode by itself? I remember I drove in normal drive mode, then at a stop, I shifted it to manual mode and noted that it was still in 4rd gear. This proved to me that it never down shifted. I am now blaming the high tire pressure for not giving it road friction to shift the transmission. Does this make any sense? I still have to investigate this further.

My new 09 got 30 on its first tank. 80% highway, and AC on. 2.4 5sp auto. Only a little aggressive acceleration so far. The tank I'm on now as been used with a bit heavier foot on the gas. It doesn't seem to be emptying any quicker, but I'll know in a couple of days. I would assume I'd get less.

The digital dash display does not accurately show what gear you're in, more like what gear you'd like to be in. Try this.... drive along in 4th at 40 mph. PUNCH it, you'll feel the car downshift, but the display will still read 4th. Try as you might, you CAN NOT start out in any gear but first, regardless of what the Vibe is telling you. The display is only accurate when you are shifting between gears that the car would normally shift into at that speed. "Driver shift control" is a bit misleading. You can force a downshift, but never an upshift if the car isn't willing.

But when I brake, it stays at the 4th gear. I then started from a stop in 4th gear. When up to speed, I then downshifted and I felt it downshift and saw the Digital number change to 3. I am not trained to use a manual stick shift so I don't know the correct way to downshift and brake at the same time. I just assummed being that it is an automatic transmission, that it will still downshift or reset back to first gear when coming to a complete stop.

My 09 2.4 5sp auto got 20.8 on its first tank. About 80% city driving with AC cranked up.A good place to keep your record for others to see:https://www.fueleconomy.gov/mpg/MPG.do

MY 2009 1.8 city driving got 25. On a 300mile trip @80mph (usually) with people 305lb and cargo = a moped about 220 lb + 30 lb misc. it got 29mpg. The return trip with same weight at 74mph (usually) it got 30mpg. a/c is always on. (Florida driver)

Just a FYI, After replacing a fuel pump in a 1996 safari van, I researched fuel pump failures and found that low fuel level's in the tank may lead to more heat build up in the pump submerged in the tanks gasoline and a shorter life span. I never try to allow any of my cars/vans to get lower than 1/4 tank of gas to hopefully keep the fuel pump submerged better and cooler. I just bought my vibe and have not checked it out yet for fuel pump location but assume it is the same.

on my gt 5sp auto first tank i got 26.89mpg and on second tank i got 29.98mpg and both were about 80% hwy and sometimes w/ a/c on. my car has under 800 miles so far, hopefully the mileage will get better after a few thousand miles.

I am averaging 28 MPGs with my 2.4 GT 5spd auto. Highest tank was 31, and lowest has been 26.M-F my driving is 90% interstate at about 70-75 MPH. On the weekends, 90% of my driving is in town.Never checked the tire pressure, and I never use the DSC, as I never drove a standard and don't care to now!

2.4 L 09 Vibe - Disappointing Gas Mileage

Post by Pink_Moon »

My 2009 2.4L Vibe has not been getting the gas mileage that I thought it would. I'm very disappointed so far and have asked the service and sales departments at the dealership for help but they can't or won't look into it and say that "it is what it is" and that some vehicles take up to 30,000 KM to break in. That seems more than a tad high to me - any thoughts?I've had the car since early September and to date have averaged 21.6 US mpg (25.9 Imp mpg) - 90% hwy, 10% city driving (travelling the speed limit). I bought this car for a few reasons, fuel efficiency being at the top of the list. Currently though, it isn't even getting what it should for city mpg rating (29 Imp mpg).Is anybody else experiencing the same thing? Are there any words of wisdom?

Wow, that is quite unusual given what I've seen other 09 2.4L owners report. How are you driving the car? That affects things greatly. Also, what gear are you in most of the time? I read one person drove around in 3rd all the time without realizing it. That would surely affect mileage too.

I think I'm a pretty good driver and even more conscious about driving smoothly and at the speed limit than ever before, to try and increase the gas mileage. Forgot to mention before that I have a 5-speed automatic with the tap-shifting (no idea how to use that!) and 5500 km (3400 miles). Have you heard how long the "break-in" period should be?

I think the break-in period varies from user to user. I'm not sure what could be causing that poor mileage rating. Perhaps take it to a third party auto mechanic?

Wow, you never check your tire pressure. Sorry if this sounds rough, but coming from a sport bike background, I feel tire pressure is an essential part of safe driving. Do yourself, and others, a favor, check it weekly. Even if you have the pressure monitor, it may take a loss of 15# pressure to light up. That can seriously mess with your handling safety, and fuel consumption.Enjoy your Vibe!

Low tire pressure is one of the things that can really pull your MPG numbers down in a hurry. Plus it will affect the way your tires wear, and like everyone else has mentioned, the way the car handles. You generally lose about a pound or more of pressure each month at steady temperature. If you let a car sit long enough, you would find that the tires would eventually go flat. Tires lose a pound of pressure for each 10 degrees of air temperature drop and gain a pound for every 10 degrees of warming. At the very least, maintain the recommended pressure in your tires. You can increase pressure safely up to the tire limit (cool tire), but that would make for a pretty rough ride in most cases. I try to keep tire pressures at 42 psi front and 39 rear. If you get into some snow, you can always dump some pressure to get a little more traction. Then when it's dry again, push the pressure back up. If you run your tires at too high a pressure... you will wear the center treads at an accelerated rate. If you keep them too low, the outside or shoulders of the tire will wear rapidly, especially in front. Try to find some middle ground that keeps the overall wear even and lets you get the best mpg you can. And don't forget to rotate tires at least a couple of times a year. Most tire manufacturers recomend rotating around 6,000 miles.

I'm averaging between 28mpg and 31mpg combined mileage. I am content for the moment. $2.00 gas doesnt hurt either though.

I noticed there was no mention of cruise control so far. Has anyone used it with these posted mpg's? I got a 09 2.4L 5sp with cruise just for better mpg. I travel min 100 miles a day 97% highway. Only had it for less then 2 days now so cant post any results yet.

I do have cruise, and used it in the Fall but have stopped using it now that it's winter and a little more slippery out. Let us know how you do for mpg :-)
