Your next Vibe may be a Chevy!

Post by ned23 »

This just in on the newswire:"(Bloomberg.com) General Motors Corp., working to cut costs to win $12 billion in government loans, is studying whether to shed its Saturn, Saab and Pontiac brands in addition to Hummer, people familiar with the matter said. "

heck, I know my current two Vibes will ALWAYS be Corollas. I don't give two bits that Wagoner made a jack@ss of himself in front of Congress and GM goes out of business. I can always get parts for my car as long as I don't ding up the body. Badge it anyway you'd like; I can always count on Denso parts to be there.

If so it would be full circle, this project started out being a Chevy Nova. What would disappoint me most though would be sticking that awful split Chevy front end treatment on!

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I'd rather it be a chevy. I thought that back when I was considering buying it. I'm not a fan of Pontiac's image.

I used to be a huge Chevy fan, my family drilled into my head at a young age that I would always be a Chevy fan. But I had a not-so-good experience with the last two Chevies and that pretty much did me in on the brand for a while. Now, they go and improve the cars, yet the styling trends are starting to be a turnoff for me.

If they do, I'll never buy a GM car. I will either start collecting classics, or give my money to another automaker.

" Saturn is finally turning around for the better, Saab has always been nice but never seemed to be a huge seller, I see Pontiacs everywhere, but usually older Grand Prix's and Grand Am's, and Hummer should have been gone a long time ago! I thought Buick would have been gone when Oldsmobile left. Cadillac is big, but with the prices, do they sell enough to be worth keeping around in a situation like this? I can imagine they wouldn't want to get rid of a name like Cadillac. I think they need to ditch Hummer, and get rid of the 20 different vehicles with different badges and keep them more segregated. Then they could dump a lot of models and just keep the big sellers, build less and make more money. I don't think the Chevrolet name will ever go, especially with names like Corvette, and bringing back the Camaro which looks like it will be a big hit.

The part with the grocery bag hooks and the big cargo area and the extra cup holders. Toyota did some of that but supplied mostly the stuff under the hood and on the road. That's why the car has been successful. American design and utility on top, Japanese under the hood. It's the future of the car industry.

Show me a Japanese car that looks like those. The Japanese have only very recently started to get the concept of "sexy" when it comes to cars. Even then, not that well. They build cars that look like cute robots or generic toys.

I think you've just hit on exactly why the Pontiac Vibe has been so successful. American-made cars have a general reputation for lower reliability when compared to foreign-made vehicles. Since reliability is solely based on the drivetrain and internal components, the Vibe truly is the best of both worlds.

My perception of Pontiac's image has been tarnished by years of hub-cap-clad Grand Am's, stale Grand Prix's, and boring Bonnies. The GTO was a great car, but I was not a fan of the brown-paper-bag styling. I prefer the Saturn Sky over the Solstice, and the Camaro over the Firebird. The new G8 is a beautiful car, and I obviously like the Vibe enough to buy one... but I don't see much else I'd consider on a Pontiac lot these days.

The Japanese have only very recently started to get the concept of "sexy" when it comes to cars. Allow me to list 3 nameplates that contradict your statement. All the way back to the 60's shall we? and then tell me that sexy has ONLYbeen a part of Europes and Americas offerings.....1967-1970 Toyota 2000GT-1970-1978 Datsun/Nissan 240Z(In fact, every Z car in the nameplates history. The presense of thiscar ALONE disproves your statement.)-1970 Mazda RX-7 (all the way up to the late 90's too)Would you like MORE?

Most of their cars that have any utility are just very plain looking. There are exceptions, e.g. I think the last generation Honda Civic looks great, but all the previous generations have no character. The Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord continue to look boring.Maybe it's just Toyota and Honda that have the problem. Nissans are looking pretty good lately.

Yes, Nissan has basically gotten the idea behind "sexy" an has produced a few nice cars over the last couple of decades. A lot of Americans like the looks of Altimas and Infinities, and their sports cars, but those are exceptions, not the rule. I do not think that most of the Honda's and Toyota's make the grade. The Toyota 2000 GT Looked like it did only because they hired a German-American designer to design it.
