I figured out what the problem is and an good solution. The problem is the door and latch are too far away from the hole in the underside of the shift housing. If you pull at the door it opens very easily. What I found was, if I lifted the door slightly, the latch holds better. So I removed the door from the housing and saw that it has 2 legs at the bottom of the door that sit in 2 grooves on the floor. I cut 2 small pieces of felt (about the size of a postage stamp) and layed them on the grooves. Then layed the legs at the bottom of the door into the grooves with the felt inbetween. The felt lifts the door slightly and allows the latch to engage the hole better. Now it's nice and tight.
Great idea, thanks. that door popping open (like when I hit LIFT ) all the time drives me nuts.
