Problem with the '04 Pontiac Aztek Rally AWD

Post by BlueCrush »

I posted this on a Aztek forum last night, but I thought I might be able to tap into the Knowledge base here to see if anyone else has heard of this issue before. I am getting Zero engine codes. Here is what I posted on the Aztek forum:Hey, everyone! I have an '04 Aztek Rally. Bought it new in '04. I have recently been experiencing some issues. I did some searches and found out and tried a few things that were suggested the problem went away for a week but now it's back. Here is what happened. The drivers side rear tire developed a small air leak and at some point my low tire warning light came on a short time later the same day the Anti-lock brake and AWD disable lights came on. So I searched on the forum that a low tire can sometimes cause those light to go on. So, I had the tire repaired, reset the low tire light. Drove the car straight and turned it off, turned it back on and all the warning light went away. So, I thought, cool! that must have been it. WRONG! This evening both the AWD disable and Anti-lock brake lights came back on but also I am now experiencing a loss in power when I go over 1/3 - 1/2 throttle. It is like the tranny is disengaging or something. So it must be something else. I already checked all fluids and everything is good. Does anyone know of any TSB's or experienced these same problems at the same time? From what I have read on the Aztek forum, there are a couple possibilities it could be: Head Gasket, Intake Gasket or Wheel Hub(s) maybe something else as well...

if ABS light and AWD light are on, couldnt that trigger the computer ie ecu to tell the car not to perform as high as to not get into serious trouble? Maybe that tires ABS needs to be checked/cleaned up? IMO sounds like a sensor isnt reading right and is triggering those errors so you cant drive to fast and get into a situation where you'd need awd/abs.

I am trying to find someone locally to borrow an ABS scanner so I don't have to buy one.

Both the AWD and ANTI-LOCK systems take input from speed sensor on each wheel. Could be a sensor (part of wheel bearing/hub assembly) is bad

Quote, originally posted by keithvibe »are the sensors in the wheels Brian?Could be just a bad sensor triggering your ordeal. The sensors are built into each wheel hub. If the sensor goes, you need to replace the entire hub. they sell for approx $50-$75 shipped on Ebay.Quote, originally posted by northvibe »do the auto part stores do the free scans on those as well or just cel's?No the local auto parts stores no longer offer free scans.Quote, originally posted by Whelan »Both the AWD and ANTI-LOCK systems take input from speed sensor on each wheel. That is why I need an ABS scanner to find out which one(s) the culprit.Quote, originally posted by keithvibe »keep in mine he is talking about an Aztek not a vibe or matrix. could be a different systemI think Adam is referring to the Aztek.

Yeah I was referring to that. I posted that as I had found it after googling "ABS and AWD light on an Aztek" Best way to find things on google is to be vague.

We'll I just bought an ACTRON CP9449 ABS BrakeScan OBD II 2 Scanner tool on Ebay. I did not find anyone in my area that had one of these to borrow to use. I figure it will save me money in the long run and it will read OBD2 codes so I can sell my other one.

Well my nbew scanner came today and it pulled a code for the front passenger side wheel speed sensor malfuntion. I'm going to take a closer look at it tonight to see if the wire or connector is just corroded or possibly a bad hub.

So, I'm takign the wheel off tonight and cleaning out the sensor and checking for any bad connections. I'm also going to check to see how hard it would be to change out the wheel hub/bearing/sensor (yes it's all in one). I also found out that I may qualify for a re-imbursement from GM under a special policy #. So, I will be checking into that as well.

OH for sure check into that special. My gf's honda has 130k miles, just threw these 2 cel's...I come to find a TSB that says it covers those for 14yr or 150k miles!!! So free fix :D Otherwise it would be about 300 in parts :/ plus my labor..which is free for her of course..

The Pumpkinmobile is fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bought a new hub with a built-in speed sensor from Ebay for $45 shipped to me. I was going to install it myself but I tweaked my neck so I called around and the Goodyear service station that installed my pulleys and tires a couple times said they would install it for only $103. So total bill was only $148 vs. other garages at $400 & the dealer at $600. Works for me!!The anti-lock brake and AWD disable lights went off right away and it also took the Aztek out of limp mode so everything is back ot normal!
