Front storage door below shifter will not stay closed.

Post by litefoot »

In the front of the Vibe just below the shifter is a small storage compartment. Has anyone taken one of them apart to fix the latch? I think the spring is bad. The door keeps popping open. It looks like it can come a part. Or is there a part number for the door. I was at the dealership this morning and was told I have to get whole front below the shifter for 300 plus..

Update the fixes everyone talked about did not work with my storage door. So I took apart the storage door and checked out the latch. The latch has two pins that hold it in to the door, one of the pins broke off. I ordered a new door for $35. Here’s the mind blower, they changed the design of the door. The latch that holds the storage door into the console is bigger / fatter; this affects at lease the 2004 model the new part is for 2004 – 2009 model years. So now you need to buy the piece around the door for the new latch to work. The console below the shifter showed, in the thread How To: Remove Front Floor Console, Automatic Transmission (Graphics Intensive) In Figure 10: shows the piece. Not wanting to pay out another $85 just because Pontiac redesigned a part, tonight I used a dermal tool to try to enlarge the hole a little. It is not pretty but the hole is on the inside and no one will see it. I’ll know in a couple of days driving if it works, and the door stays closed. I’ll update this thread in a couple of days with the out come.

Hey lite, next time it opens up on its own, put some super glue around the edges and then hold it in the closed position for about 10 seconds. That should take care of that annoying little problem for good! Otherwise, you did a great fix and saved some $$ by doing a nice work around on the 'redesign'. You have to admit, though, that my slightly more permanent solution would be a few cents less expensive. Nice job.

Ok it has been over a week and the storage door has been staying closed. Enlarging the slot for the latch for the new redesigned door works, on the old frame. The new slot is a 1/16 inch larger on each side and double the size deep.I did not cut it closer to the edge, just farther back. Hopefully this will save someone else the $85 for the frame too, or $350 for the two pieces and having installed by the dealer.
