Exhaust Question

Post by sloth »

Ok, I really don't know much about exhaust systems. This morning I started my car up and it sounded like a tank. I have a 2003 Vibe GT.Right after the cat, the weld broke to the pipe going to back to the muffler. From what I can tell is that is all part of the cat so I'd have to replace all of that I was able to put a clamp on it to get it back together. It sounds much better but still seems louder than what is normal. I might just be hearing things or my muffler is partially plugged and causing some issues. So should an exhaust shop be able to weld that back together? If I do need a new muffler, should they be able to just put a new pipe in and attach it there.I REALLY don't want to have to buy a new cat.

Providing that your cat is not blown, you shouldn't need a new one. An exhaust shop shouldn't have a problem welding it together or adding some new pipe to piece it back together. It's probably still louder because exhaust is still leaking out of the spot where you clamped it. If you don't have to replace anything, it should not be that expensive of a fix. You would be mostly paying for labor. And if you do need a muffler, they can just splice it right in there, you wont need to replace the whole thing unless you decide that you want to replace everything with an oem exhaust system. Oh, and if you do need a muffler for some reason, pm me if you want because I have a stock muffler I don't use.

Thanks ajflan.I was surprised at how poorly it was welded together. Not even the tiniest amount of bead is on the cat, it all came off on the pipe. It's definitely still leaking where I put the clamp on.
