Does this sound right?

Post by gottabstick »

Hey all,I recently had my wife take in our 2003 GT for a much needed clutch replacement. I work out of town so I couldn't be around to deal with the technicians. Anyways I called in for a quote last week, gave them the specs '03 6 speed vibe GT and I have my own clutch to be installed. These guys did their thing and got back to me with a fair priced quote. Now the car went in for the repairs today and I called to see how things were going. He said the new clutch is in but it is going to cost more than the quote... $140 more to be precise. Naturally I was shocked and said, now wait a minute thats way more than the initial quote - whats going on. The technician explained to me that it was more work because I had the high performance engine- harder to get off the frame etc. He said that the initial quote was for the regular engine (but I clearly stated GT). I dont want to kick up a huge stink about this whilst I'm out of town and they still have the car.Does this sound right or really fishy to you guys ?? Anyone any idea what my rights are , I mean how on earth can they change the price after I gave them the proper information and received a quote from them based upon that??My wife will be going in there tomorrow to pick it up.. I was just going to have her pay then deal with it once I got back.PaulAny

if you can prove 110% that they had the knowing that it was a GT model when you had them give you a quote then dont pay them till they honour the quote. in saying that if you can prove they had the knowing and they still say more $ for the job fry them, if not your better off paying it or bring it to a new shop because obvesly their retarted

The 1ZZ and 2ZZ engine are quite similar and one should not cost more to do a clutch on then the other. In fact the 2ZZ clutch should be cheaper because the clutches fail so often that every mechanic should be well practiced in doing them.

Not sure about OK. But in most states they most inform you and get your verbal or written permission before they do the work if they intend to charge you more than you were originally quoted. As for the specifics on differences between how the 1ZZGE and 2ZZGE engines are mounted I have no idea. If at no point did you tell them to go ahead with the work with the additional cost you, you should be able to refuse the service. That's just my input.

Sorry I should've noted that we are in Canada at the moment. Man I wish I was at home right now- I get the feeling like these guys are trying to pull a fast one on my wife. Worst thing is that I have no cell service through the day, so it's not like I can talk to them when she goes to pick up. I have zero tolerance for this kind of stuff-but what can you do when theyre holding the keys to your car??
