Sounds like he was privately battling cancer for some time and finally lost.http://www.cbsnews.com/stories...shtmlWhile I don't really agree with his recent positions on global warming, I really respected his novels in how he used modern science as the groundwork for entertaining storylines. It really brought a sense of legitimacy and accessibility to science fiction.
Michael was truly one of my all time favorite authors. If you haven't read any of his books...please do! I am amazed with his books especially Jurassic Park, The Lost World, and Congo. I haven't had much time to read lately but hopefully I will get back to my collection of his work. I am really looking foward to State of Emergency or whatever its called (the one about global warming)...Lots of conflicting interests. He will be truly missed. It's an absolute shame that his brilliant mind will no longer be with us.

excellent author who will be missed, for sure. Read his books, don't watch the movies (especially "Sphere" and "Congo", the movie adaptations were godawful). Well, Jurassic Park was pretty good. The sequels were lousy. I always liked the way he made the science in his books like a character all its' own, very thorough and in-depth.
