alpine hu with m&t

Post by J-vibe06 »

I have a 2006 with the Moon and Tunes sound system, and I plan to upgrade the Head unit very soon. I am looking at the alpine cda-9884 or cda-9886. I know that because I have a factory amp then I either need to go preamp out of the new hu, or use the pac oem2 from crutchfield to lower the speaker outputs from the new hu to go into the preamp. I imagine just using the converter is the easiest solution just to get it done, but I would assume the preamp outs would sound better if used. Does anyone have any good opinions on this. I've searched the forums and seen many cases of this, so I guess I'm looking for anyone who has done or heard both and may have noticed a true difference in quality. I know if I went preamp out I'd have to splice RCAs, and that is not an issue for me.Also, if I do end up using the preamp outs, the output voltage of the two HUs I'm looking at are different. They both have 6 preamp outs, but the 9884 has an output voltage of 2 volts, while the 9886 has an output of 4 volts. What difference will that make in comparing the units? Is one more compatible than the other with the factory amp? Thanks for any info you guys have. This is my first post here, but I've been a reader of this forum since i bought my vibe new in 06.- Jason

If you are running the new HU into the factory amp, the pac2 IS the way to go... if you plan on replacing the factory amp with an aftermarket unit, the RCA outputs are the way to go... simple..

I put in a Kenwood HU and I spliced a couple of RCAs to the wire harness, and at first it worked and sounded great, but when I skipped tracks, turned it on or off, or change sources, there was a very loud popping sound from the speakers.I think it is because of unbalanced to a balanced amp.Anyway, I went with the PAC and to me I think it sounds very good.

The speaker level outputs and the RCA outputs are completely different... in terms of output power and delivery... The MAIN difference is the fact that the speakers outputs are rated in Watts, where as the RCAs are rated in Milli-Watts... so you were seriously overdriving the amp... there is some impeedence differences as well, but not that need to be discussed..

Awesome guys, thank you for the responses. Looks like I will in fact go the simple route and use the converter.
