do it yourself rust proofing

Post by kenwood »

Has anyone try to do rust proofing themselves on a vibe or any other vehicles? I just bought a 09 vibe (1.8L model) but is overwhelmed by the large selection of rust inhibitor (rust check) available at the store. Any tips on which one is the most effective?

Don't do it. Today's cars don't need rustproofing, thats why you never see it advertised anymore. Rustproofing makes it more likely to rust as it can trap water and clog weep hole. This is with professional installation. Rustproofing yourself will also void the rustproofing warranty, although GM may not be around to honor it. The last car I had rustproofed rusted, and the three cars I have had since (8-10 years each) no rust.

But do not get "undercoating" and rustproofing confused. Undercoating= cheesy dealer gimick promising sound deadening and rustproofing, but often causing rust for the reasons you have stated. Rustproofing is much more dollar and labor intensive and is well worth it for the right situations.

Really not needed like the others say but if you wanted to do parts yourself, it can't hurt. Either way, be prepared to have it done yearly or so since it does not last forever, even if a pro does it.

Rust check will warranty your car for as long as you own if you have it done within the first 3 years of it being new.
